Hyundai Launches Sonata Sedan in South Korea with New Engine Options

Hyundai launched an updated Sonata sedan in South Korea with new engine options. The revamped Sonata is now available in seven different engine options, including the existing gasoline (petrol) and hybrid editions as well as three new choices - a 1.7-litre diesel powertrain, the downsized 1.6-litre turbo model, and its first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version. The 1.7-litre diesel and the 1.6-litre turbo engines are mated to a seven-speed double clutch transmission, and offer fuel-efficiency of 16.8 km/l and 13.4 km/l, respectively. The former is priced in the range of KRW 24.95-29.5 million (USD 22,180-26,230), while the latter is priced at KRW 24.1-29.5 million. As far as the PHEV model is concerned, the model has a fuel-efficiency rate of 17.2 km/l, and is priced in the range of KRW 39.95-42.6 million.

For the month, the company reported total sales of 408,026 sales units against 412,835 sales units a year ago. For the year to date, the company reported total sales of 2,416,626 sales units against 2,496,563 sales units a year ago.

Hyundai Inks Deal with POSCO ICT to Construct 120 EV Charging Stations

Hyundai has inked a deal with POSCO ICT for the construction of 120 charging stations in 2015, this comes before the launching of the company's Sonata plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in next month. The Sonata PHEV is the company's first developed PHEV model. Powered by a 2-liter Nu GDI engine, 50-kilowatt electric motor and six-speed transmission, the vehicle can run more than 40 kilometers only using electricity. As per the agreement, Hyundai will construct the infrastructure, while POSCO will operate and manage the charging facilities. Around 180 charging stations that POSCO has been operating and some 120 more it plans to build in the country, which will be open to Hyundai customers as well. It is stated that those stations will be within discount stores and movie theaters and places that have better daily access to people. On the other hand, Hyundai will also construct 121 charging stations within its showrooms and service centers by the end of 2015. In July, the automaker plans to jointly establish a special purpose company (SPC) with KEPCO to participate in the country-wide project to build infrastructure for environmentally friendly vehicles. Hyundai will launch a new brand for its hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars at the end of this year, while its smaller affiliate Kia Motors, which is selling EVs including Soul and Ray, will launch new K5 plug-in hybrid 2015.
