Thales and Zinio Partner to Deliver an Enhanced Digital Magazine Experience to the In-Flight Entertainment Market

Thales and Zinio announced a strategic partnership to bring the best magazines from around the globe to airline passengers. Zinio's Android In-Flight Application for digital magazines is available via the Thales App Portal - the most robust application development portal available to airlines. Zinio will leverage its catalog of international titles, offering Thales's customers an unrivalled choice of content ranging from the world's big brands to niche specialist titles.  Interests and topics covered include news, politics, technology, art, style, travel and more. Passengers will experience Zinio's innovative digital magazine reading experience, including an interactive table of contents, page layout view, zoom and pan, and a simple text view for easier reading of long-form articles. Zinio is also developing an HMTL5 In-Flight Application for Thales's wireless entertainment capabilities, expanding the Zinio digital magazine experience to passenger-owned devices such as laptops, smartphones and tablets. This is expected to go live in the second quarter of 2015.

Verifone Selects Thales to Protect Card Holder Data

Thales announced that Verifone now uses Thales nShield hardware security modules (HSMs) for its end-to-end payment encryption solution - VeriShield Total Protect - to provide robust, high speed, scalable crypto to protect card holder data, whether transmitted from a card or mobile device, right from the moment of capture. Thales HSMs provide a highly secure, high speed and scalable solution in Verifone's end-to-end encryption architecture, which reduces the risk of payment card data compromise within a merchant's retail environment. The protection of payment card data by encrypting from Verifone's secure payment terminals all the way to the Thales HSMs also dramatically reduces the number of applicable Payment Card Industry (PCI) controls, simplifying the deployment environment for the merchant. VeriShield Total Protect from Verifone protects merchants, payment providers and consumers alike by encrypting card holder information from the moment it is captured at the terminal until it is securely accessed behind a processor's firewall. Thales HSMs are used to perform secure key exchanges and secure key derivations that produce a unique key to protect each and every payment transaction. All the decryption is performed within the Thales HSMs, protecting the encryption keys from virtually any attack. Taking advantage of capabilities unique to the Thales Security World architecture, Verifone is able to seamlessly combine multiple HSMs at multiple data centers to service very high transaction volumes with automated load balancing and failover, a capability not offered by other solution providers.

Thales Receives Maritime Mine Counter Measures Contract from OCCAr

OCCAr, on behalf of the French Defence Procurement Agency, or DGA, and UK MOD's Defence Equipment & Support organization, has awarded a maritime mine counter measures, or MMCM, contract to Thales Group. The contract was awarded to Thales in collaboration with BAE Systems and their partners in France (ECA Group) and in the UK (ASV, Wood & Douglas, SAAB). Initiated in 2012 under a cooperation agreement between France and the UK, the MMCM programme develops a prototype autonomous system for detection and neutralisation of sea mines and underwater improvised explosive devices (UWIEDs). The MMCM contract includes three stages, starting with a first phase for design. The next stages, which are subject to contract options, will manufacture and experiment the future mine countermeasures capabilities of both France (SLAM-F future mine countermeasures system) and the UK (MHC - Minecountermeasures and Hydrography Capability). The programme will deliver an autonomous, remotely operated mine countermeasures solution. As part of the MMCM programme, Thales is committed to providing systems to both the French Navy and Royal Navy for two years of evaluation testing. Each system will comprise a USV (Unmanned Surface Vehicle) equipped with an autonomous navigation system, an obstacle detection and avoidance sonar, a threat identification and neutralisation capability based on ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles), a T-SAS (Towed Synthetic Aperture Sonar) and AUVs (Autonomous Underwater Vehicles). The geolocated AUVs will use the latest-generation synthetic aperture sonar SAMDIS with multi-aspect functionality for improved classification. They will perform their tasks autonomously with control from a host ship or shore-based station via high-data-rate communication links. The systems, meeting the operational requirements of both nations, incorporate technologies including very high-resolution multiview imaging sonars and sophisticated analysis tools to provide unparalleled levels of performance in automatic threat recognition and classification. The project will be delivered by an integrated team including personnel from Thales in France and the UK as well as BAE Systems. French and UK contractors involved in the MMCM system include ASV Ltd. for the supply of the surface vehicle, ECA Group for the supply of the underwater unmanned vehicles, SAAB for the ROVs and Wood & Douglas for communications. Thales will deliver the integrated Portable Operations Centre (POC) solution, which will incorporate command & control by Thales and BAE Systems. BAE Systems will provide the Mission Management System, managing the command and information systems, as well as the ROVs, the virtual visualization and experimentation suite. The launch of this programme builds on the Lancaster House defence and security cooperation treaties signed in November 2010.
