hca holdings inc (HCA) Key Developments

Two Competing Hospital Systems Files Lawsuit Seeking to Block HCA from Relocating Plantation General Hospital to Campus of Nova Southeastern University

Two competing hospital systems filed a lawsuit seeking to block HCA from relocating Plantation General Hospital to the campus of Nova Southeastern University. In December, the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration approved the application by HCA to move the 264-bed hospital from Plantation about 6.5 miles south to Davie, where it would serve as the teaching hospital for NSU's medical school. HCA is already building a stand-alone emergency room there. The old Plantation medical campus would continue to offer emergency services. A January 8, 2015 complaint by the Memorial Healthcare System and Cleveland Clinic Florida seeks to reverse AHCA's approval of that application. The lawsuit said that the replacement hospital would result in the unnecessary duplication of hospital acute care services and would result in a loss of patients to the competing hospitals. The challenge is being heard before State Administrative Law Judge W. David Watkins. The new hospital would total 382,906 square feet and cost $251.4 million to build.
