Corning Incorporated manufactures and sells specialty glasses, ceramics, and related materials worldwide. The company operates through five segments: Display Technologies, Optical Communications, Environmental Technologies, Specialty Materials, and Life Sciences. The Display Technologies segment manufactures glass substrates for active matrix liquid crystal displays (LCDs) that are used primarily in notebook computers, flat panel desktop monitors, and LCD televisions. The Optical Communications segment manufactures optical fiber and cable, and hardware and equipment products comprising cable assemblies, fiber optic hardware and connectors, optical components and couplers, closures, network interface devices, and other accessories. The Environmental Technologies segment manufactures ceramic substrates and filter products for emissions control in mobile and stationary, and gasoline and diesel applications. The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide approximately 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics, and fluoride crystals. The Life Sciences segment develops, manufactures, and supplies scientific laboratory products, such as general labware and equipment, as well as specialty surfaces, media, and reagents for cell culture research, bioprocessing, genomics, drug discovery, microbiology, and chemistry. This segment also develops and produces various technologies, including the Corning Epic technology for screening; the Corning HYPER platform of vessels for cell yields; Corning Microcarriers for cell scale-up, therapy, and vaccine applications; Corning CellBIND, Matrigel, BioCoat, and Synthemax II surfaces; and Corning stemgro media. Corning Incorporated has strategic collaboration agreement with World Kitchen, LLC. The company was formerly known as Corning Glass Works and changed its name to Corning Incorporated in April 1989. Corning Incorporated was founded in 1851 and is based in Corning, New York.

Clover to Use Antimicrobial Corning® Gorilla® Glass as the Cover Glass in Its Clover™ Mobile Devices

Corning Incorporated announced that Clover will begin using Antimicrobial Corning® Gorilla® Glass as the cover glass in its Clover™ Mobile devices. Clover will be the first company to use Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass in payment terminals. Corning Gorilla Glass can help protect these and other frequently touched surfaces from contamination. With more than 40,000 units of its Clover Station product shipped to date, Clover is prepared to equip merchants with EMV™-enabled payment terminals as the U.S. payment card industry transitions from magnetic-stripe cards to chip cards to adhere to the Europay, Mastercard, Visa (EMV) global standard. Corning introduced the world’s first antimicrobial cover glass in 2014 to help protect against surface contamination. It is also the world’s first antimicrobial glass registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It is based on ionic silver that is embedded in the glass for antimicrobial protection that will last the lifetime of the device. It combines its built-in antimicrobial property with the renowned benefits of Corning® Gorilla® Glass technology, including durability, scratch resistance, and toughness. Antimicrobial Corning Gorilla Glass can be installed in electronic devices such as computers, cellular phones, calculators, telephones, and other electronic display panels. Other markets include interior architectural surfaces for healthcare and hospitality industries, transportation and architectural structures such as wall panels, doors and windows, and protective panels for frequently touched surfaces. Antimicrobial protection is limited to the glass product itself, and Corning makes neither direct nor implied health claims about the product.

Diebold, Incorporated and Corning Incorporated to Introduce Automated Teller Machine Touch Screen Featuring Antimicrobial Corning® Gorilla® Glass

Diebold, Incorporated and Corning Incorporated have teamed up to introduce the automated teller machine (ATM) touch screen featuring Antimicrobial Corning® Gorilla® Glass. The glass is formulated with an embedded antimicrobial agent, ionic silver, which inhibits the growth of algae, mold, mildew, fungi and bacteria on its surface. The companies will showcase a prototype antimicrobial touch screen on Diebold's newly released 5500 series ATM in Corning's booth during the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Jan. 6-9, 2015, in Las Vegas. Antimicrobial protection is limited to the glass product itself, and neither Corning nor Diebold makes any direct or implied health claims about the antimicrobial properties of the product.

Corning Incorporated Introduces Corning Iris Glass

Corning Incorporated introduced Corning Iris Glass - a substrate that can significantly reduce the thickness of a liquid crystal display TV set, making it as thin as a smartphone. The company developed Iris Glass for use as a light-guide plate (LGP) in edge-lit LCD TVs. All LCDs require a backlight to generate images. Light-guide plates are an integral part of the backlight assembly, distributing and directing LED light through the TV. The primary innovation for Iris Glass is its outstanding transmission, which delivers bright pictures and proves glass is a viable LGP material. Although plastic's transmission is adequate, it has limitations as an LGP. It lacks rigidity, which impacted panel makers' ability to develop thinner TVs. To compensate, panel makers incorporated extra structural components, adding weight and bulk to the conventional edge-lit LCD TV. Further, because plastic expands when exposed to humidity, manufacturers also needed to increase the size of the framing area of the TV's exterior, known as the bezel. Iris Glass is 36 times stiffer than plastic, freeing panel makers to design TVs that are less than 10 millimeters thick. Iris Glass delivers 90% lower thermal expansion, enabling narrower bezels for sleeker designs. Using Iris Glass as an LGP means panel makers can now add a new layer of advanced Corning glass into their set designs.
