Gamesa Announces Power Generation from G114-2.5MW Turbine Prototype in Alaiz

Gamesa has announced that the prototype of its new G114-2.5 MW turbine installed in Alaiz, Navarre has started to generate power. Installation of the turbine triggers the start of the intensive process of validating and certifying the new turbine. The company expects to obtain type certification during the last quarter of 2015. The annual output of a single G114-2.5 MW turbine will provide enough power to supply some 2,250 households a year; two turbines will generate enough to supply a town of over 10,000 inhabitants. In addition, the annual output of a single G114-2.5 MW turbine will replace 871 tonnes of oil equivalent (toe/year) and prevent the emission of 6,075 tonnes of carbon a year. Assembly of the prototype posed a genuine logistics challenge for Gamesa. The G114-2.5 MW's blades - 56 metres apiece - were transported in one piece and the components were made at multiple locations in Spain: the blades in As Somozas (Galicia); nacelle assembly in Agreda (Soria); the hub and gearbox in Burgos; the generator in Reinosa (Cantabria) and the converter in Valencia. The prototype installed in Alaiz boasts a modular design, enabling tailored configuration to factor in each facility's specific construction and logistics considerations. The turbine can also be ordered with nacelles made in a single piece. Two other prototypes are installed at the Alaiz R&D facility: the G128-4.5 MW and the G114-2.0 MW. The new G114-2.5 MW turbine is underpinned by proven technology, validated in the Gamesa 2.0-2.5 MW platform, one of the most reliable in the market, having been installed in 34 countries (cumulative installed capacity: 19,300 MW). This turbine, designed for class II wind speed sites, comes with a longer blade and increased nominal capacity of 2.5 MW in order to maximise efficiency and profitability while reducing the cost of energy in the 2.0-3.0 MW segment. As a result, the G114-2.5 MW turbine produces 29% more power than the G97-2.0 MW model, while lowering the cost of energy by 10%.

SunEdison and Gamesa Sign on Memorandum of Understanding to Develop up to 1 Gigawatt of Wind Power Plants

SunEdison and Gamesa signed memorandum of understanding to create a 50/50 joint venture to develop up to 1 GW of wind energy power plants globally by 2018. SunEdison and Gamesa will each own a 50% stake in the joint venture. Under the terms of the agreement, Gamesa will supply the wind turbines and be responsible for operation and maintenance of the wind power plants as part of long term O&M agreements. Gamesa may also provide engineering, procurement, and construction services for the projects. Ownership of the projects will be shared during development; upon construction SunEdison will acquire the projects from the joint venture. SunEdison will purchase additional wind turbines from Gamesa, based upon development volume targets achieved by the joint venture. SunEdison intends to place the power plants acquired from the joint venture on the call rights list for TerraForm Power. It is expected that the definitive agreement, including the initial selection of projects for development from Gamesa's pipeline, will be signed by the end of 2015.
