The company’s products comprise microcontrollers, ranging from 8-bit products to higher performance 16-bit and 32-bit products with on-board flash memory, which provide the digital logic or intelligence for electronic applications and controlling electronic equipment or analyzing sensor inputs; single-and multi-core microprocessors; and applications processors with embedded memory, and special purpose hardware and software for multimedia applications. It also offers wireless connectivity products for low power wireless communications functionality; communications processors that perform tasks related to control and management of digital data, and network interfaces; and radio frequency devices, such as power transistors, receivers, and tuners. In addition, the company provides analog and mixed-signal products, such as system-basis chips, auto engine control, stability and braking solutions, battery and power management, and motor control devices, CAN/LIN interface solutions, radar solutions, and signal conditioners; and sensors comprising pressure, inertial, magnetic, proximity, and gyroscopic sensors. Further, the company offers digital signal processors to perform baseband modem processing; digital signal controllers, which offer solutions for digital power conversion, motor control, and other applications in consumer, industrial, and healthcare markets. It serves original equipment manufacturers, distributors, original design manufacturers, and contract manufacturers through its direct sales force and distributors. The company was formerly known as Freescale Semiconductor Holdings I, Ltd. and changed its name to Freescale Semiconductor, Ltd. in April 2012. The company was incorporated in 2006 and is based in Austin, Texas. Freescale Semiconductor, Ltd. is a subsidiary of Freescale Holdings L.P.

Freescale Introduces its First Gallium Nitride RF Power Transistor for Cellular Base Stations

Freescale Semiconductor introduced its first gallium nitride (GaN) RF power transistor for cellular base stations. The new A2G22S160-01S delivers exceptional performance in 30 W and 40 W amplifiers for wireless infrastructure applications, and represents the first of what is planned to become a broad portfolio of Airfast family GaN transistors for the cellular market. GaN delivers higher power conversion efficiencies, faster switching speeds and greater power densities than silicon, enabling the creation of power transistors that are much smaller in size and that outperform traditional devices. This is made possible due to the wider band gap, higher critical electric field and very high electron mobility characteristics that GaN provides. While GaN migration has been cost prohibitive in the past, recent commercial and technological advances are driving manufacturing costs lower. A long-time leader in semiconductor manufacturing, Freescale is unleashing the advantages of GaN for some of the biggest markets in the world and enabling a large-scale rollout of GaN power amplifiers in mainstream commercial base station markets. Freescale’s Airfast family of RF power products covers the entire range of wireless cellular spectrum from 600 MHz to 3.8 GHz, with multiple semiconductor technology options. The A2G22S160-01S offers performance in the frequency range between 1800 MHz and 2200 MHz. For example, in a 40 W Doherty two-way asymmetrical amplifier employing one A2G22S160-01S in the carrier path and two in the peaking path, maximum output power is 56.2 dBm. With 8dB output back-off (OBO), gain is 15.4 dB and efficiency is 56.7%. Adjacent-channel power (ACP) is -55 dBc with digital predistortion (DPD) when driven by two 20 MHz LTE carriers with an aggregate 40 MHz carrier bandwidth. The A2G22S160-01S GaN RF power transistor is now in production, with reference designs and other enablement solutions available.

Freescale Semiconductor Introduces Intelligent Sensing Framework 2.1

Freescale Semiconductor introduced its Intelligent Sensing Framework (ISF) 2.1, which now includes integration with Freescale’s Processor Expert tool to help create, configure, and generate embedded sensor-based applications for Freescale microcontrollers (MCUs). This integration, together with the framework’s sensor fusion functionality and expanded support for additional sensor types, speeds and simplifies the development of sensor-based solutions for the Internet from the connected home and wearables to new medical and connected industrial applications. A large portion of new, sensor-based Internet of Things (IoT) solutions originate from startup organizations often unfamiliar with the complex process of abstracting, combining and using sensor data. As sensors become increasingly critical to the success of IoT applications, embedded developers need to find ways to quickly and easily integrate multiple streams of sensor data with the MCUs powering their applications. ISF 2.1 is designed to grow with the Freescale sensor portfolio, and now integrates Freescale’s Sensor Fusion library as a drop-in Processor Expert orientation sensor component. This component enables full configuration of the underlying sensors and fusion algorithms. The framework can deliver sensor data in common engineering units which allow developers to switch between sensors without additional coding to support different device-specific formats. ISF is a key aspect for easily obtaining data to be used in Freescale’s Sensor Data Analytics workflow as demonstrated by the company’s embedded data logger for analytics. Additional Features: Register-level interface to sensors; User-defined serial data streaming; Support for a broad set of Freescale accelerometers, magnetometers, gyroscopes and pressure sensors; Support for the CodeWarrior and Kinetis Design Studio IDEs'; Comprehensive documentation: Software Reference Manual, API document, release notes; Available training videos; Example projects targeting Freescale’s Freedom development platforms and sensor shield boards. ISF 2.1 is released in a public source model making source code available to developers during the development process at no cost.

Freescale Introduces New Network Services Switching Platform

Freescale Semiconductor Inc. has introduced a new network services switching platform. The new network services switching platform combines the performance and efficiency of a traditional network switch with the manageability, flexibility and security required for the software-defined networking (SDN) era. Developed in conjunction with leading ODM Advantech and delivered as a white box solution, Freescale's new platform leverages Freescale's 24-core, server-class QorIQ T4240 processor and VortiQa Open Network software. The platform utilizes standards-based protocols such as OpenFlow, and supports manageability through open technologies such as OpenStack and OpenDaylight. It also enables exceptional network security for virtualized environments by supporting the integration of high performance packet processing functions such as firewalling, intrusion detection and IPSEC over VxLAN.
