The company’s products comprise microcontrollers, ranging from 8-bit products to higher performance 16-bit and 32-bit products with on-board flash memory, which provide the digital logic or intelligence for electronic applications and controlling electronic equipment or analyzing sensor inputs; single-and multi-core microprocessors; and applications processors with embedded memory, and special purpose hardware and software for multimedia applications. It also offers wireless connectivity products for low power wireless communications functionality; communications processors that perform tasks related to control and management of digital data, and network interfaces; and radio frequency devices, such as power transistors, receivers, and tuners. In addition, the company provides analog and mixed-signal products, such as system-basis chips, auto engine control, stability and braking solutions, battery and power management, and motor control devices, CAN/LIN interface solutions, radar solutions, and signal conditioners; and sensors comprising pressure, inertial, magnetic, proximity, and gyroscopic sensors. Further, the company offers digital signal processors to perform baseband modem processing; digital signal controllers, which offer solutions for digital power conversion, motor control, and other applications in consumer, industrial, and healthcare markets. It serves original equipment manufacturers, distributors, original design manufacturers, and contract manufacturers through its direct sales force and distributors. The company was formerly known as Freescale Semiconductor Holdings I, Ltd. and changed its name to Freescale Semiconductor, Ltd. in April 2012. The company was incorporated in 2006 and is based in Austin, Texas. Freescale Semiconductor, Ltd. is a subsidiary of Freescale Holdings L.P.

Freescale Introduces Secure MCU Platform Based on ARM® Cortex®-M Technology

Freescale Semiconductor announced the new Kinetis K8x multi-application microcontroller (MCU) family, which delivers the high levels of integrated security available on an ARM® Cortex®-M class platform. Creating a secure embedded application has previously required up to three ICs, including the main processor, a security co-processor to perform cryptographic functions, and in some cases an IC for physical tamper protection. The Kinetis K8x MCU family performs all of these functions in a single MCU for savings in cost, size and power. By building exceptional security into this general market MCU family, Freescale is bringing secure connectivity to Internet of Things (IoT) applications such as point of sale equipment, smart energy gateways, home automation and building controls, portable healthcare devices and wearables. Freescale is now delivering Kinetis K8x MCU samples and development boards to lead customers worldwide. Full production for the K8x MCUs is planned for the fourth quarter of 2015.

Freescale S32K MCUs Debut as First Automotive Microcontroller Product Line Designed for the Software Engineer

Freescale Semiconductor introduced the S32K – the first automotive microcontroller (MCU) product line designed to significantly speed and simplify software development. The S32K is based on the widely adopted ARM Cortex architecture, which delivers exceptional scalability and compatibility for a range of automotive electronics applications traditionally served by a heterogeneous and incongruous mix of 8-, 16- and 32-bit MCUs, while providing a strong foundation for advanced tools and software platforms. To streamline software engineering and advance automotive software development technology beyond the traditional Autosar Microcontroller Abstraction Layer (MCAL), Freescale is introducing a comprehensive, automotive-grade software development kit (SDK) providing critical middleware for a set of drivers necessary to operate S32K MCUs. In addition, Freescale has created an open integration environment for developers targeting S32K MCUs. The new S32 Design Studio (DS) provides an easy-to-use platform capable of supporting a host of time-saving software and tools. DS is engineered to eliminate months of R&D time across all phases of development, from rapid prototyping to production readiness and re-use on the next project. With the combination of Freescale’s existing Cortex-M0+-based KEA MCU family and the new, more powerful Cortex-M4-based S32K product line, Freescale now offers an extremely scalable ARM Cortex-based portfolio for automotive applications ranging from body and chassis control to touch-sensing interfaces, to communication gateways and applications requiring electrical motor control features. Sharing the same ARM Cortex architecture, customer software written for these product lines is compatible across numerous MCUs and automotive applications, allowing customers to dramatically extend the value of automotive software investments via code reuse. Freescale’s combined Cortex M0+ and M4-based automotive MCU offerings span a broad memory space and include package options from 8K to 2MByte with 16 to 176 pins initially. In addition to software hurdles, automotive engineers can also face challenges associated with designing systems that comply with current and future standards. Freescale’s S32K MCUs are designed to help simplify and speed ISO26262 assessments by applying Freescale’s best-in-class SafeAssure functional safety program throughout the portfolio. The increasingly interconnected nature of a vehicle’s control modules means there is no safety without security. Consequently, to support broad vehicle-level functional safety and security, S32K MCUs incorporate a Secure Hardware Extension (SHE) compliant module to help secure communications and protect the integrity of subsystems. The S32K supports CAN Flexible Data rate (CAN-FD) as well as the new FlexIO configurable peripheral, allowing customers to implement future communication protocols not yet invented, as well as to expand channels to existing on-chip hardware protocol controllers. The S32K MCUs’ ARM Cortex-M4 core architecture includes an IEEE-754 compliant Floating Point Unit (FPU), unleashing the full potential of model-based design flows. The combination of a fast CPU with flexible low-power modes and low-leakage process technology means customers need not compromise performance to realize power efficiency. Sampling of S32K devices is planned for Alpha customers in the third quarter of 2015. General availability is planned for 2016.
