ford motor co (FORDP) Key Developments

Ford Launches Ford Telematics

Ford has launched Ford Telematics powered by Telogis, the next-generation of its fleet-management platform, which had been known as Crew Chief powered by Telogis. The availability of the system, introduced at the 2015 Work Truck Show (3 6 March), is being expanded to global markets, rather than just the United States and Canada, and new features and analytics have been added. The system is available from the Ford factory or as a dealer-installed aftermarket option, and it can be financed with the purchase of the vehicle and covered by the Ford warranty. The system is available for the 2009 model-year or newer Super Duty and F-150, Transit, Transit Connect, E-Series vans and Police Interceptor utility and sedan, and this will be expanded to the F-650 and F-750 in 2016. Additionally, Ford has introduced all-new 2016 model-year F-650 and F-750 medium-duty work trucks. The new trucks receive the Ford 6.7-litre PowerStroke V8 diesel, which the automaker says is now 25% quieter than before. The engine took several design upgrades to achieve the noise loss, including changes to the fuel injectors to optimise and make quieter the combustion process. The engine is available in 270-hp, 300-hp, and 330-hp outputs. Ford is also offering a gasoline (petrol) 6.8-litre, 320-hp V10 engine for the entries, which can be factory-prepared for conversion to natural gas. The truck will be offered in regular cab, supercab, and crew cab body styles in straight-frame, dock-height, and an all-new dedicated tractor model for heavy towing. The new trucks also have a revised look inside and out, with the area behind the cab redesigned for easier accommodation for custom work bodies. Sales begin in summer 2015, with production at Ford's Ohio assembly plant.

Ford Motor Company Develops Two Electric Bike Prototypes

Ford Motor Company has developed two electric bike prototypes, as part of research into new mobility solutions. The prototypes were announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, and the experimental models evaluate 'last-mile' solutions the distance between final destination and end of the mass transit option. The Handle on Mobility project is part of Ford's Smart Mobility Plan. The prototype bikes, MoDe:Me and MoDe:Pro, have a 200-watt motor and nine-amp battery and provide electric pedal assist for speeds up to 16 miles per hour. A rear-facing ultrasonic sensor system warns when a vehicle is overtaking by vibrating both handlebars, and it warns the overtaking motorist by illuminating the bike's handlebar grips. The MoDe:Me bike is meant for urban commuters and the MoDe:Pro bike for urban commercial use. Handle-bar grip vibrations let the rider know which direction to take, when paired with a navigation system. The MoDe:Link iPhone6 app provides navigation, multimodal navigation, and smart routing that informs on cost, time, and amount of biking on a trip. Separately, Ford has introduced water jets to keep rear-view cameras clean and enable projection of a clear image on the in-car screen. The water jet activates with the windshield cleaning function, similar to existing headlamp washer systems. The system will be optional on some F-150 models and the all-new Edge and facelifted Explorer. The Lincoln MKX also uses a similar system to keep its front camera clear.
