E.ON to Shut Down the 1.3 GW Grafenrheinfeld Nuclear Power Plant

E.ON decided to shut down the 1.3 GW Grafenrheinfeld nuclear power plant (NPP) half a year before final decommissioning date, set by the government in the weeks after the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan in 2011, as it is unprofitable to run. E.ON decided to retire the 33-year-old reactor in 2014 in the southern state of Bavaria earlier than required as operating NPPs in Germany only makes financial sense if they can run for an adequate length of time without the burden of the nuclear-fuel tax.
