The University of Tennessee and Eastman Chemical Co. Signs on Research Deal

The University of Tennessee took another step to broaden its role in advanced technology as it signed an agreement with Eastman Chemical Co. to collaborate on research, particularly in neutron science and additive manufacturing. The deal, made at Eastman's world headquarters in Kingston. As part of the Eastman agreement, that company will provide $750,000 in funding over three years to support research efforts between Eastman scientists and UT faculty and students. A Federal Judge Refuses to Throw Out a Lawsuit Filed Against West Virginia American Water and Eastman Chemical over the January 2014 Chemical Leak

A federal judge this week refused to throw out a lawsuit filed against West Virginia American Water and Eastman Chemical over the January 2014 chemical leak that contaminated drinking water supplies for 300,000 residents in Charleston and surrounding communities. The class-action suit alleges the water company did not adequately prepare or respond to the leak, which occurred just 1.5 miles upstream from its regional water intake. It alleges Eastman - which manufactured the chemical MCHM and sold it to Freedom Industries - did not properly test the chemical or warn buyers or the public about potential health impacts. In two orders issued this week, U.S. District Judge John T. Copenhaver dismissed some parts of the case, but said he would allow lawyers for residents and businesses to continue to pursue large portions of their claims against West Virginia American and Eastman. Copenhaver dismissed one count and partially dismissed two counts out of the 12 counts that lawyers for West Virginia American had sought to have thrown out. In a 46-page opinion, the judge threw out a legal claim for private nuisance and partially dismissed claims concerning violations of state and federal drinking water rules and alleging a violation of consumer protection law.
