eutelsat communications (E3B) Key Developments

Eutelsat Communications Announces the Creation of a New Division in the UK; Appoints Matt Child to Head New Division

Eutelsat Communications announced the creation of a new division in the UK that will drive its strategy for serving providers of end-to-end government services, NGOs and institutional agencies in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Eutelsat Government EMEA will be located at Harwell, near Oxford, in security-cleared facilities at the heart of an emerging community of space-based companies and agencies that include ECSAT, ESA's new facility for space applications and telecommunications, and the Satellite Applications Catapult (formerly the International Space Innovation Centre). The division will be headed by Matt Child, former CEO of Solaris Mobile, who joined Eutelsat in 2014 to contribute to structuring Eutelsat's long-term vision on government-related business including satellite bandwidth leases, shared satellites and hosted payloads.

Eutelsat Communications Announces New EUTELSAT 115 West B Satellite

Eutelsat Communications announced that the xenon-ion thrusters of the all-electric EUTELSAT 115 West B satellite have been powered up, enabling the ascent from supersynchronous transfer orbit to geostationary orbit to be initiated as planned on 12 March. Eutelsat's new satellite was launched by SpaceX on March 1, 2015. The 2.2-tonne EUTELSAT 115 West B was prepped for electric propulsion orbit raising in the days following the launch by its prime contractor, Boeing, from its El Segundo facilities in California. Other key activities included full deployment of the satellite's solar panels that was successfully carried out on 6 March, giving a total wingspan of 33 metres and enabling power to be generated for the electric orbit raising and activation of the communications payload later in the mission. Orbit raising is scheduled to last for approximately eight months and will be followed by performance tests prior to the new satellite's commercial entry into service in November 2015. Equipped with 12 C-band and 34 Ku-band transponders connected to four service areas, EUTELSAT 115 West B will extend reach of the Americas to markets in Alaska and Canada, replacing the EUTELSAT 115 West A satellite that operates in inclined orbit at 114.9 West. It will focus in particular on serving clients providing data services, including broadband access, cellular backhaul, VSAT solutions and social connectivity.

Eutelsat Communications Société Anonyme to Launch New EUTELSAT 115 West B Satellite

Eutelsat Communications Société Anonyme announced that EUTELSAT 115 West B, the first all-electric satellite, is scheduled for launch by SpaceX using the Falcon 9 rocket on 1 March 2015 at 22.49 to 23.34 hours EST. This latest satellite by Eutelsat, built by Boeing Defence and Space, arrived in Cape Canaveral on 25 January 2015. According to the company, this satellite, which is equipped with 12 C-band and 34 Ku-band transponders connected to four service areas, will extend reach of the Americas to markets in Alaska and Canada, replacing the EUTELSAT 115 West A satellite that operates in inclined orbit at 114.9° West. Also, this new EUTELSAT 115 West B satellite will focus in particular on serving clients providing data services, including broadband access, cellular backhaul, VSAT solutions and social connectivity. Reportedly, using electric propulsion for in-orbit raising, EUTELSAT 115 West B will enter service in the fourth quarter of 2015. It will be followed into orbit later this year by the all-electric EUTELSAT 117 West B satellite that will be located at 117 degrees West to boost capacity for Latin America broadcast markets.
