It acquires, promotes, sells, and distributes digital entertainment programming primarily through satellite to residential and commercial subscribers. The company offers DTH digital television and multi-channel video programming distribution (MPVD) services. It provides a collection of programming in the MVPD industry, including approximately 195 high-definition (HD) television channels, 1 ultra-HD channel, and 1 3D channel; and video-on-demand (VOD) services under the DIRECTV CINEMA name, which provide a selection of approximately 12,000 movie and television programs to its broadband-connected subscribers, as well as operates directv.com that provides subscribers access to approximately 21,000 movie and television programs. The company also offers professional and collegiate sports programming, such as the NFL SUNDAY TICKET package, which allows subscribers to view NFL games. In addition, it provides digital-quality video entertainment and audio programming under the DIRECTV and SKY brands. Further, the company owns and operates 2 sports networks in Denver, Colorado and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as well as 2 sports networks in Seattle, Washington and Houston, Texas under the ROOT SPORTS brand name. DIRECTV was founded in 1977 and is headquartered in El Segundo, California.

The Supreme Court to Hear DirecTV Appeal over Termination Fees

The Supreme Court will consider whether satellite provider DirecTV can cut off a class action lawsuit and force customers suing over early termination fees into private arbitration hearings instead. The justices agreed on March 23, 2015 to hear an appeal from DirecTV, which says its customer agreements do not allow customers to band together to sue the company. The company argues that customers must use arbitration to resolve their claims one by one. A California state appeals court ruled against the DirecTV last year, saying that state law forbids agreements that waive customer's rights to bring a class action. The state Supreme Court affirmed. DirecTV argues that California law is pre-empted by the Federal Arbitration Act, which favors such agreements. Justices will hear arguments this fall in the case, DirecTV v. Imbruglia, 14-462.

Scripps Networks Interactive, Inc. Launches Food Network on DIRECTV in Latin America

Scripps Networks Interactive, Inc. has announced a pan-regional launch of Food Network, a culinary lifestyle channel, on DIRECTV across countries in Latin America. Food Network, first launched in Brazil, will now launch with DIRECTV, reaching more than six million viewers a across the region. Food Network will be broadcast in both standard definition on channel 233, as well as high definition on channel 1233, and will offer global programming featuring kitchen competition, culinary adventure, instructional cooking and home entertaining.

FTC Sues DirecTV over its Ad Deals

The Federal Trade Commission accused DirecTV for not clearly disclosing that a discounted 12-month package required a two-year contract that included a big rate hike in the second year and a hefty early termination fee if the customer wants out. In addition, an offer for three free months of premium channels such as HBO and Showtime didn't adequately disclose that customers would automatically be charged for them after the trial period unless they called to cancel. It's the second time in recent years that the El Segundo company has been accused by government officials of misleading consumers. DirecTV paid $13.25 million in 2010 to settle similar allegations filed by attorneys general of California and 48 others states, as well as the District of Columbia. The action brought cheers from consumer advocates, along with a fine-tuned quip on the company's heavy advertising. The FTC alleged that the company violated federal law by ‘making deceptive claims or omissions of material facts in advertisements and on its website’. DirecTV failed to ‘clearly and prominently’ disclose that 12-month packages required a two-year contract in which the monthly price more than doubled to $45 in the second year. The suit said customers who wanted out of the deal had to pay an early termination fee of $20 for each month remaining on their contract. In the case that was settled in 2010, state prosecutors alleged that DirecTV offered special deals with hidden costs, such as higher prices in the second year. DirecTV also was accused of extending customers' contracts without their knowledge and failing to deliver promised sports channels and other programming. DirecTV agreed to ‘clearly and conspicuously disclose, in direct proximity’ to an advertised price, all ‘material limitations’ on all future offers.
