CSX Corporation, together with its subsidiaries, provides rail-based transportation services in the United States and Canada. It offers traditional rail services, and transports intermodal containers and trailers. The company transports crushed stone, sand and gravel, metal, phosphate, fertilizer, food, consumer, agricultural, automotive, paper, and chemical products; and coal, coke, and iron ore to electricity-generating power plants, steel manufacturers, and industrial plants, as well as exports coal to deep-water port facilities. It also provides intermodal transportation services through a network of approximately 50 terminals transporting manufactured consumer goods in containers in the eastern United States, as well as performs drayage services, including pickup and delivery of intermodal shipments; and trucking dispatch services. In addition, the company serves the automotive industry with various distribution centers and storage locations; and connects non-rail served customers through transferring products from rail to trucks, such as plastics and ethanol. Further, it is involved in the acquisition, development, sale, lease, and management of real estate properties. The company operates approximately 21,000 route mile rail network, which serves various population centers in 23 states east of the Mississippi River, the District of Columbia, and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec, as well as owns and leases approximately 4,000 locomotives. It also serves production and distribution facilities through track connections. The company was founded in 1978 and is based in Jacksonville, Florida.

CSX Corp. announced unaudited consolidated earnings results for the second quarter and six months ended June 26, 2015. For the quarter, the company announced revenue of $3,064 million compared to $3,244 million for the same period a year ago. Operating income was $1,017 million compared to $997 million for the same period a year ago. Net earnings before income taxes were $887 million compared to $850 million for the same period a year ago. Net earnings were $553 million compared to $529 million for the same period a year ago. Net earnings per common share, assuming dilution were $0.56 compared to $0.53 for the same period a year ago. For the six months, the company announced revenue of $6,091 million compared to $6,256 million for the same period a year ago. Operating income was $1,860 million compared to $1,736 million for the same period a year ago. Net earnings before income taxes were $1,598 million compared to $1,456 million for the same period a year ago. Net earnings were $995 million compared to $927 million for the same period a year ago. Net earnings per common share, assuming dilution were $1.00 compared to $0.92 for the same period a year ago. Net cash provided by operating activities was $1,582 million compared to $1,445 million for the same period a year ago. Property additions were $1,288 million compared to $956 million for the same period a year ago. The company also provided earnings guidance for the third quarter and full year of fiscal 2015. The company expects third quarter EPS to be relatively flat to the prior year. Included in this outlook, the company expects to incur at least $0.01 impact related to the Maryville, Tennessee derailment. The company expects volume to decline slightly in the third quarter. For the year, the company expects to deliver mid-to-high single digit earnings per share growth for 2015, although the upper end of that range. With low natural gas prices and high inventory levels continuing to reduce utility coal demand, the company expects domestic coal volume to decline by approximately 10% for 2015 and the outlook for export coal volume remains approximately 30 million tons for the year.
