Authority Wants Cable & Wireless To Sell Stake In Telecommunications Operator

The Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago has imposed conditions on the proposed takeover of Columbus Communications Inc. by Cable & Wireless Communications Plc (LSE:CWC). The conditions require CWC to sell its 49% stake Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (TSTT) to secure approval for the deal. The authority reportedly rejected CWC's acquisition bid based on apprehensions that if CWC acquires Columbus while retaining its stake in TSTT, the deal would hurt competitiveness in the country's telecoms sector.

TelEm Reportedly Mulls Partner

TelNet Communications Inc. is seeking partner. Sint Maarten's incumbent telco TelEm is in talks with a prospective new partner after discussions regarding the possibility of a strategic partnership with pan-Caribbean operator Digicel Group Limited failed to yield results. The Daily Herald quotes Ludson Evers, President of the Sint Maarten Communication Union, “the company's talks with Digicel were 'fruitless', with Evers noting that TelEm has now initiated talks with another potentialpartner. While Evers declined to give the name of the new company, the Daily Herald notes that it is likely to be Digicel's chief rival, Cable & Wireless Communications Plc (LSE:CWC).
