A Former Executive Files a Lawsuit against Centene Corp

A former executive who filed a lawsuit against Centene Corp. alleging that she was improperly fired says a counter-claim that says she is trying to extort $3 million is a 'not so thinly-veiled campaign of retaliation.' Former Sunflower State Health Plan Inc. Vice President Jacqueline Leary in October filed the suit, which says she was fired after protesting potentially improper cost-cutting moves for Kansas' Medicaid program. Leary's suit says she questioned a directive not to assign Medicaid participants to some physicians based on whether their institutions had contracts with Centene, a move aimed at lowering costs but a possible violation of its contracts with the state and with individual providers. Centene has said Leary didn't complain about the practice until she received a poor job performance evaluation.
