Cummins Inc. Reports Unaudited Consolidated Earnings Results for the First Quarter Ended March 29, 2015; Provides Earnings Guidance for the Full Year 2015

Cummins Inc. reported unaudited consolidated earnings results for the first quarter ended March 29, 2015. Net sales were $4,709 million compared to $4,406 million a year ago. Operating income was $548 million compared to $513 million a year ago. Income before income taxes was $548 million compared to $511 million a year ago. Net cash provided by operating activities was $173 million compared to $263 million a year ago. Capital expenditure was $100 million compared to $107 million a year ago. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) increased to $562 million for the first quarter or 11.9% of sales, up from $528 million or 12.0% of sales a year ago. Net income attributable to the company grew 14% in the first quarter to $387 million or $2.14 per diluted share, compared to $338 million or $1.83 per diluted share in the first quarter of 2014. The increase in revenue year-over-year was driven by stronger demand in on-highway markets and distributor acquisitions in North America. Currency negatively impacted revenues by 3% compared to last year, primarily due to a stronger US dollar. Based on the current forecast, the company expects full year 2015 revenues to grow between 2 and 4%, and EBIT to be in the range of 13.5 to 14.0% of sales. For 2015, the company continues to forecast revenue growth of between 23% and 27% over 2014 levels. The company now expects EBIT margins to be in the range of 7% to 8% of sales, down 100 basis points at the midpoint from previous guidance, primarily due to currency. The company expects earnings from China joint ventures to grow as share of the heavy-duty truck market increases with the ramp-up of new ISG 10- and 12-liter engines. EBIT projections for the full year remain unchanged at 11% to 12% of sales. In the Components segment, the company continues to project revenue growth of between 4% and 8% for the full year, and raising EBIT projections to between 14% and 15% of sales, which is up 75 basis points at the midpoint compared to previous guidance due to strong performance and cost-reduction initiatives. The company is maintaining its guidance for the Power Generation business with full year revenues expected to be flat to down 4% and EBIT margins to be in a range of 8% to 9% of sales. Effective tax rate for the full year is forecast to be 29.5%, excluding any onetime tax items. Operating cash flow to be in the range of 10% to 15% of sales for the full year. The combination of returns to shareholders and capital expenditures resulted in a decline in balance of cash and marketable securities of $282 million from 2014 year-end levels.
