Caterpillar Inc. manufactures and sells construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines, and diesel-electric locomotives worldwide. The company’s Construction Industries segment offers backhoe, small wheel, skid steer, multi-terrain, compact track, medium and compact wheel, and track-type loaders; mini, wheel, and track excavators; track-type tractors; and select work tools, motor graders, telehandlers, soil compactors, and pipelayers, as well as its related parts for the heavy and general construction, rental, mining and quarry, and aggregates markets. Its Resource Industries segment provides electric rope and hydraulic shovels; draglines; drills; highwall and longwall miners; hard rock vehicles; articulated, large mining, and off-highway trucks; large wheel loaders; wheel tractor scrapers; wheel dozers; machinery components; and electronics and control systems for use in mining and quarry applications. The company’s Energy & Transportation segment offers reciprocating engines; reciprocating engine powered generator sets; integrated systems and solutions for the electric power generation industry; and turbines and its related services, centrifugal gas compressors, diesel-electric locomotives and components, and rail-related products and services. Its Financial Products segment provides retail and wholesale financing primarily for Caterpillar equipment, machinery, and engines; offers property, casualty, life, accident, and health insurance; insurance brokerage services; and purchases short-term trade receivables. The company’s All Other segments remanufactures engines and components; provides business strategy, and development, management, manufacturing, marketing, and support primarily for paving, forestry, industrial, waste, and Cat products. The company was formerly known as Caterpillar Tractor Co. and changed its name to Caterpillar Inc. in 1986. The company was founded in 1925 and is headquartered in Peoria, Illinois.

Caterpillar Moves 2 Joliet Production Lines to Mexico; Cuts 230 Jobs at the Illinois

Caterpillar Inc. announced that it will move two production lines from its Joliet plant to Mexico in a plan that will result in the loss of 230 jobs at the Illinois site. The company announced that it was pushing ahead with the plan in order to "remain cost competitive." Under the plan, the company will move production of gear and engine oil pumps and valves to a sister plant in Monterrey, Mexico. The transition is expected to begin in late 2016 and be completed by the middle of 2018.

Caterpillar Reports Retail Sales Results for the Month of February 2015

Caterpillar reported retail sales results for the month of February 2015. The company reported that global machine sales fell 11% during a three-month rolling period ended in February. Machine sales were down in every geographic region, with Latin America posting the large drop, falling 32% year-on-year. The company's construction and resources segments posted sales decreases of 11% and 12%, respectively while energy and transportation retail sales rose 17% year-on-year for the three-month rolling period ended last month. The resource industries segment reported a sales drop in every region except Asia/Pacific, which grew 37% while the construction industries segment experiences a sales drop in every region except Europe, Africa and Middle East (EAME), which rose 5%.

Caterpillar Inc. Reports Earnings Results for the Year 2014; Provides Earnings Guidance for 2015

Caterpillar Inc. reported earnings results for the year 2014. On slightly lower sales and revenues, profit per share in 2014 was $5.88, from $5.75 in 2013. And excluding restructuring charges, profit per share was up 7% to $6.38. And operating cash flow of $7.5 billion was the third best year in company history. The sales decline is driven by several factors, but the single biggest factor is direct and indirect impacts from oil and gas price declines. Moving on to the highlights of 2015 outlook that were released in the end of January. Sales and revenues are expected to be about $50 billion, which is down about 9% from 2014 levels. For the year, the company expects profit per share of $4.60 and excluding restructuring costs, at $4.75. The company is committed to decremental operating profit margin rate of about 25% to 30%.
