Caterpillar Inc. manufactures and sells construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines, and diesel-electric locomotives worldwide. The company’s Construction Industries segment offers backhoe, small wheel, skid steer, multi-terrain, compact track, medium and compact wheel, and track-type loaders; mini, wheel, and track excavators; track-type tractors; and select work tools, motor graders, telehandlers, soil compactors, and pipelayers, as well as its related parts for the heavy and general construction, rental, mining and quarry, and aggregates markets. Its Resource Industries segment provides electric rope and hydraulic shovels; draglines; drills; highwall and longwall miners; hard rock vehicles; articulated, large mining, and off-highway trucks; large wheel loaders; wheel tractor scrapers; wheel dozers; machinery components; and electronics and control systems for use in mining and quarry applications. The company’s Energy & Transportation segment offers reciprocating engines; reciprocating engine powered generator sets; integrated systems and solutions for the electric power generation industry; and turbines and its related services, centrifugal gas compressors, diesel-electric locomotives and components, and rail-related products and services. Its Financial Products segment provides retail and wholesale financing primarily for Caterpillar equipment, machinery, and engines; offers property, casualty, life, accident, and health insurance; insurance brokerage services; and purchases short-term trade receivables. The company’s All Other segments remanufactures engines and components; provides business strategy, and development, management, manufacturing, marketing, and support primarily for paving, forestry, industrial, waste, and Cat products. The company was formerly known as Caterpillar Tractor Co. and changed its name to Caterpillar Inc. in 1986. The company was founded in 1925 and is headquartered in Peoria, Illinois.

Caterpillar to Lay Off Workers Due to Mining Sector Slump

Caterpillar Inc. announced that it will lay off another 50 workers at its East Peoria, Illinois campus on June 22, 2015 because of a downturn in demand for mining equipment. The latest action brings to 270 the number of workers Caterpillar has said it will lay off this year at its East Peoria campus. The company employs about 3,900 workers at the site, which is its main manufacturing hub.

Caterpillar Enters Strategic Collaboration with Modustri to Develop Equipment Monitoring Technology

Caterpillar announced that it has entered into a strategic alliance with Modustri. Caterpillar and Modustri will work together to develop tools that will enhance Cat customers' abilities to measure wear on their equipment's parts. In turn, these technologies will help customers optimize their fleets more effectively. By utilizing web-based and mobile platforms, the companies will deliver simplified processes that provide customers accurate, immediate access to useful, real-time data while still in the field. In the coming months, Caterpillar will collaborate with Modustri and the Cat dealer network to create the latest Cat equipment wear management technologies through web-based and mobile platforms, which will now be available for customer use.

Caterpillar Inc. Announces Executive Changes

Caterpillar Inc. announced the following officer changes: Mary Bell, vice president with responsibility for the Building Construction Products Division, has elected to retire. Ken Hoefling has been appointed as a Caterpillar vice president to replace Bell. Both moves are effective July 1, 2015. Mark Sweeney, vice president with responsibility for the Europe South America Operations Division, has elected to retire effective August 1, 2015. William Finerty, vice president with responsibility for the Diversified Products Division, has elected to leave the company to pursue other opportunities. His move is effective August 1, 2015. From 2013, Ken Hoefling started his current responsibilities as general manager of Steel Products in the Remanufacturing Components and Work Tools Division based in Peoria.
