caterpillar inc (CAT) Key Developments

Caterpillar to Establish Regional Training Center in Dubai

Caterpillar announced that it will build a Regional Training Center for the African and Middle East Region (AME) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The Center will offer hands-on machines and power systems technical and sales training to Caterpillar's dealers and customers in the AME region. At an investment of more than $7 million, the approximately 1,700 m2 center will employ about 40 people, mostly high-level technical staff who will primarily be recruited from the region. The more than 7,000 technicians at AME Cat dealers have some of the most direct connections with Caterpillar customers as they service and maintain their equipment. The training they'll receive at the new Center in Dubai will help to enhance their skills and knowledge on both product and the latest product support technologies. The Center will also feature a lab for Scheduled Oil Sampling analysis that will help meet critical customer required turnaround time of emergency samples and reduce downtime of Caterpillar products in the region. The Center will be located at Caterpillar'sMiddle East parts distribution center and Regional Sales and Marketing office in Jebel Ali, Dubai.

Caterpillar to Lay Off 150 Workers at Decatur Plant

Caterpillar Inc. is laying off 150 full-time production workers at its Decatur plant in response to weak demand for mining equipment. The indefinite layoffs of the workers are expected to begin May 11 at the central Illinois plant. The layoffs are intended to bring production in line with demand as the mining industry continues to face weak market conditions.

Caterpillar Inc. and First Solar, Inc. Form Strategic Alliance to Develop an Integrated Photovoltaic Solar Solution for Microgrid Applications

Caterpillar and First Solar, Inc. announced a strategic alliance to develop an integrated photovoltaic (PV) solar solution for microgrid applications. Under the agreement, First Solar will design and manufacture a pre-engineered turnkey package for use in remote microgrid applications, such as small communities and mine sites. The package will feature Cat-branded solar panels manufactured by First Solar and will include a balance of system components. Caterpillar will exclusively sell and support the integrated solution featuring Cat-branded solar panels through its worldwide Cat dealer network, along with its current offerings of generator sets and energy storage. Acting as a central source, Cat dealers will be uniquely positioned to provide customers with this fully integrated and supported single solution in the large and rapidly growing microgrid market. Microgrids provide value to prime power diesel and gas customers by integrating renewable energy, such as solar power, with generator sets. With these solutions, Caterpillar can help deliver reliable, cost-effective and sustainable energy for customers. This strategic alliance provides yet more evidence of a global energy transition, where solar energy's reliability and cost competitiveness with traditional fuels effectively allows it to complement conventional generation.
