Sky Plans to Launch Milan Arts Production Hub

Sky has announced plans to launch a hub for its arts output located in Milan. The company described the move as a first step to creating pan-European TV programming after last year's acquisition of Sky Italia and Sky Deutschland for GBP 6.9 billion. The new Sky arts production hub will make shows for Sky's 21 million customers across Italy, Germany, Austria, Ireland and the UK, as the company seeks to diversify away from sports and compete with companies such as Netflix in the production of original content. Sky was committing EUR 18 million to the hub over three years, with the investment likely to be financed in part by the imminent closure of the Sky Arts 2 channel in the UK.

Skype Updates on Complaint Against Sky plc for the Trademark Registration

The General Court of the European Union has ruled that the logo of Skype could be confused with a trademark registered by Sky plc. The General Court was delivering its decision on May 5, 2015 on a complaint brought by Skype, which was refused a trademark by OHIM, the EU Trade Mark and designs registry. In 2004 and 2005 Skype applied to the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (Trade Marks and Designs) for registration of the figurative and word signs SKYPE as a Community trade mark for audiovisual goods, telephony and photography goods and computer services relating to software or to the creation or hosting of websites. In 2005 and 2006, British Sky Broadcasting Group, now Sky plc and Sky IP International, complained to the EU's trademark watchdog, pleading the likelihood of confusion with its earlier Community word mark SKY, filed in 2003 for identical goods and services. Skype challenged it before the General Court, seeking annulment of those decisions. But on May 5, 2015, the higher Court dismissed Skype's petition, and confirmed that there exists a likelihood of confusion between the figurative and word sign SKYPE and the word mark SKY.
