Banco Popolare Reportedly To Appoint Mediobanca, Merrill As M&A Advisers

Banco Popolare Societa Cooperativa Scarl (BIT:BP) is set to appoint Mediobanca and BofA-Merrill Lynch as advisers for a possible merger with another domestic cooperative bank, three sources close to the matter said. Two of the sources said the "most intense" contacts Banco Popolare, based in the rich northern region of Veneto, was holding about a possible combination were with Lombardy rival UBI. UBI, which according to sources is working with Credit Suisse but has not given a formal mandate to any advisers, declined to comment. The sources said a second option for Banco Popolare was a merger with Banca Popolare di Milano Scarl (BIT:PMI) while a tie-up with the other two Veneto banks - Veneto Banca and Popolare di Vicenza - remained a more remote possibility. On July 14, 2015, Banca Popolare dell'Emilia Romagna picked Goldman Sachs as its own adviser on merger options.

Banca Popolare Explores Strategic Options

Banca Popolare di Milano Scarl (BIT:PMI) is exploring the strategic alternatives for lender. Banca Popolare di Milano hired Citibank N.A., Italy and Lazard & Cp. S.r.l. to evaluate the options. Citi and Lazard will also act as financial advisers on the lender's transformation into a joint stock company.

CEO Reportedly Says Banco Popolare Seeks Tie-Up

Banco Popolare Societa Cooperativa Scarl (BIT:BP) is seeking a partner to merge and has started talks with prospective buyers, said Pier Francesco Saviotti, Chief Executive Officer of Banco Popolare in an interview for Il Sole 24 Ore. Pier Francesco further added that no plan has been finalized yet and they are still in talks. Pier Francesco believes that a merger partner would be found in a reasonable time. Banca Popolare di Milano Scarl (BIT:PMI) is considered the favorite partner and Unione di Banche Italiane Scpa (BIT:UBI) and Veneto Banca s.c.p.a might also be considered.
