Major Lenders Set Eyes On Infrastructure Projects

PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (JKSE:BBCA), PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk. (JKSE:BBNI) and PT Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk (JKSE:BMRI) are looking to infrastructure projects this year in an effort to drive business.

Bank Negara Indonesia Seeks Acquisitions

PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk. (JKSE:BBNI) (BNI) plans to buy a mid-sized institution in a bid to move up the rankings and become one of the top three banks in the country by asset size. The planned purchase would be "a win-win game" for both BNI and the banking system as a whole, said President commissioner Rizal Ramli. Indonesia needs to consolidate its banks and grow their capital base ahead of the imposition of new standards by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, Ramli said in an interview on March 31, 2015. "Essentially, there are many mid-sized banks that are under pressure because they have to increase capital under Basel III," said Ramli, "They don't have too many options and their franchises are too small for foreign banks. That's our opportunity." While declining to say which banks BNI may target, Ramli said he would be looking to buy an institution with a complementary business, a price of about one time book value and a "compatible" culture.
