The company engages in the exploration, development, and production of oil and gas; development of potash; mining of metallurgical coal, thermal coal, copper, silver, lead, zinc, molybdenum, uranium, gold, and iron ore; mining, refining of bauxite into alumina, and smelting of alumina into aluminum metal; and mining and production of nickel products, as well as manganese metal and alloys. It is also involved in the exploration, development, and production of hydrocarbons; and nickel mining smelting and refining, as well as provision of administrative services. BHP Billiton Announces Lay Offs of 30 Mine Workers at Mount Arthur Coal Mine in the Hunter Valley

BHP Billiton announced that around 30 mine workers at the company's Mount Arthur Coal mine in the Hunter Valley are expected to be laid off later July 3, 2015. The job losses at the Muswellbrook mine are part of a cost cutting exercise BHP Billiton announced last year. The cuts were expected to take place in February, but were held off when wet weather and other factors delayed work. Miners permanently employed at the Mount Arthur mine will not be impacted by the changes, with only contractors affected.

BHP Billiton plc Announces Potash, Petroleum Heads

BHP Billiton has appointed Dean Dalla Valle as the chief commercial officer taking charge of the potash business. Tim Cutt, who was earlier president potash and petroleum, will now concentrate exclusively on the petroleum business. Dalla Valle will retain the current responsibilities as president health, safety, environment, marketing and technology as well. He will assume responsibility for potash from August 1, 2015. Cutt will be president petroleum from July 1. Athalie Williams, whose current title is president human resources, will take on the title of chief people officer. Tony Cudmore, whose current title is president corporate affairs, will take on the title of chief public affairs officer. These changes will also be effective July 1.
