BASF Launches New Extruded Polystyrene Product

BASF has expanded its product range of extruded polystyrene rigid foam panels, XPS, with the brand name Styrodur to include a new product, Styrodur 3000 CS, having the same thermal conductivity of 33 mW/mK across all panel thicknesses from 30 to 240 mm. The thermal conductivity of the insulation panels is up to 15% better than standard Styrodur grades. The new production technology involves joining together several thinner panels with excellent technical properties. Besides improved thermal conductivity, the new technology also leads to faster availability of thick insulation panels. The resulting flexibility benefits primarily the building material suppliers and construction site management. The new Styrodur 3000 CS provides architects and planners with a product for many structural and civil engineering applications. Using Styrodur 3000 CS simplifies calculations as a result of it having the same thermal conductivity for all thicknesses. In addition, it is now possible to install the insulation in one layer, allowing the insulation to be installed by the craftsman at the building site more quickly and cost-efficiently.

BASF Plans EO/EG Shutdown in June 2015 at Ludwigshafen, Germany

BASF is due to close its ethylene oxide plant in Ludwigshafen, Germany, for around 10 days in June, 2015. The site has a nameplate capacity of 345,000 tonnes/year EO and 25,000 tonnes/year of by-product ethylene glycol. INEOS Oxide has currently shut down its Lavera facility in France for a scheduled outage. Shell's force majeure on EO is ongoing. Panic over where customers would get lost volumes from seems to have dissipated and arrangements have clearly been made. Consumption is steady and in line with availability.

BASF to Invest Up to €56 Million to Expand Global Polyvinylpyrrolidone Output

BASF plans to invest up to €56 million to expand its global polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) value chain over the next four years. Through revamping existing plants in Ludwigshafen, Germany and Geismar, Louisiana and introducing the PVP technology at BASF's site in Shanghai, China, the company will increase its global PVP production capacities by up to 6,000 metric tons.
