Yara International ASA and BASF Begin Building Ammonia Plant in Freeport, Texas

Yara International ASA and BASF broke ground on July 27, 2015 on ammonia plant at the BASF site in Freeport, Texas. Total capital investment for the plant - which is expected to come online in 2017 - is estimated at $600 million. As part of the project, Yara will build an ammonia tank at the BASF terminal and BASF will upgrade its current terminal and pipeline assets for the export of ammonia from the new plant. The plant will have a capacity of about 750,000 metric tons per year and will be owned 68% by Yara and 32% by BASF. Each party will off-take ammonia from the plant in accordance with its equity share. BASF will use its share of ammonia from the plant to produce caprolactam, a key ingredient in the manufacture of nylons for carpet, textiles, film, monofilaments, and wire and cable. Yara will market the remainder mostly to industrial customers in North America, in addition to supplying the agricultural sector. The hydrogen based process that will be used in the new plant significantly reduces capital expenditures and maintenance compared to a traditional natural gas based ammonia plant. A long-term supply agreement for nitrogen and hydrogen has been signed with Praxair Inc. linking the feedstock variable cost to the advantageous natural gas prices available at the U.S. Gulf coast.

BASF to Exit Dimer and Polyamide Resin Business Due to North American Market Decline

BASF announced plans to exit the dimer and polyamide resin business due to the North American market decline over the past 15 years driven by excess market capacity and a decline in key markets including printing. The decision will result in the closure of the dimer and resin production unit at BASF s Kankakee, Illinois, location. BASF will work with customers directly on exit stock materials and support the transition to new suppliers through the end of 2015. BASF is also evaluating the sale of intellectual property associated with the dimer and polyamide resin business. Trade names of products manufactured at Kankakee include Empol®, Genamid®, Versadyme®, Versamid®, Versamine® and Versacure®. This decision has been difficult because it impacts employees in Kankakee and dimer and polyamide customers BASF will continue to operate the Kankakee site which supplies customers with products for the Nutrition and Health and Care Chemicals Divisions of the company. Approximately 50 positions both manufacturing and commercial roles will be affected.

BASF and Solazyme, Inc Announces Launch the First Commercial Microalgae-Derived Betaine Surfactant

BASF and Solazyme, Inc. announced the launch of the first commercial surfactant derived from microalgae oil, a high performance algal betaine for use in home and personal care applications. Commercialized by BASF under the trade name Dehyton® AO 45, algal betaine is a betaine surfactant made from renewable microalgae oil. The new algal betaine is a high- performance alternative to amidopropyl betaine in products that require rich and gentle foam such as shampoos, liquid soaps, hand dishwashing liquids, and other applications. Amidopropyl betaines are amphoteric surfactants increasingly used in cosmetic, toiletry and home care applications due to their vast benefits and are known to have: good detergency, good foam properties and foam stabilization, hard water compatibility, mildness to skin and hair, ability to reduce irritation of anionic systems, viscosity building, conditioning effect, stability at a broad range of pH, and excellent biodegradability. Dehyton® AO 45 is produced with Solazyme AlgaPur™ Microalgae Oils. AlgaPur™ Oils are produced with Solazyme’s technology in a matter of days, using a highly controlled fermentation process to convert sugarcane into oils of the high purity and performance. AlgaPur™ Microalgae Oils are produced with low carbon, water and land use impact.
