Alliant Energy Corporation operates as a utility holding company that provides regulated electricity and natural gas services to residential, commercial, industrial, and wholesale customers in the Midwest region of the United States. It operates through three segments: Electric, Gas, and Other. The company, through its subsidiary, Interstate Power and Light Company (IPL), primarily generates and distributes electricity, and distributes and transports natural gas in Iowa and southern Minnesota; and generates and distributes steam in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Alliant Energy, through its subsidiary, Wisconsin Power and Light Company (WPL), generates and distributes electricity, and distributes and transports natural gas in southern and central Wisconsin. As of December, 31, 2014, IPL supplied electricity to 529,000 retail customers and natural gas to 235,000 retail customers; and WPL supplied electricity to 463,000 retail customers and natural gas to 185,000 retail customers. It offers electric utility services to retail customers in food manufacturing, chemical, and paper industries. In addition, the company holds investments in various businesses, which provide freight services through a short-line railway between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, Iowa; a barge terminal and hauling services on the Mississippi River; and other transfer and storage services. Further, it owns a non-regulated natural gas-fired electric generating unit near Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin; and owns the non-regulated 99 MW Franklin County wind project located in Franklin County, Iowa. The company was founded in 1917 and is headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin.

Alliant Energy Corporation announced unaudited consolidated earnings results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2015. For the quarter, the company's net income attributable to the company was $96.6 million, or $0.87 per diluted share; down from $108 million or $0.97 per diluted share in the first quarter of 2014. Operating revenues were $897.4 million, down from $952.8 million reported for the same period last year. Operating income was $152.9 million compared to $154.2 million a year ago. Income before income taxes was $119.7 million compared to $131.2 million a year ago. Cash flows from operating activities were $314.7 million compared to $293.6 million a year ago. The primary drivers of lower EPS in the first quarter of 2015 when compared to the first quarter of 2014 were lower electric and gas sales due to the significantly colder temperatures in early 2014 than early 2015, higher electric transmission service expense at Wisconsin Power and Light Company (WPL), and retail electric customer billing credits at Interstate Power and Light Company (IPL) in the first quarter of 2015. For full year 2015, the company expects earnings to range from $3.45 to $3.75 per diluted share. The consolidated effective tax rate for 2015 is forecasted to be 17%.
