Allianz to Shrink German Business, Shift Customer Service Online

Allianz announced plans to shrink its German operations, closing almost one-third of its offices and shifting services online. The number of offices is to reduce from 88 to 60 by the start of 2016, resulting in the loss of 360 jobs. The restructuring, a reaction to increasing costs in the insurance business, was expected to lead to savings of EUR 40 million per year. The job losses were expected to hit internal management and support roles, but there were to be no enforced redundancies. In large cities like Berlin and Munich where there are currently three offices, there will only be one in future. The company would shift many of its services online, with customer service offered remotely by video through social networking sites like Facebook. An unspecified number of jobs were also expected to go in Germany's north-east.
