Alcatel-Lucent provides Internet protocol (IP) and cloud networking, and ultra- broadband access worldwide. The company’s Core Networking segment offers IP routing, carrier Ethernet, network functions virtualization, and software defined networking applications and infrastructure to meet the challenges of network traffic growth while supporting the delivery of cloud-enabled business, mobile, and residential services for service providers, mobile network operators, cable/multiple system operators, transportation, utilities, and large-scale enterprises. It also provides optical networking equipment to transport information over fiber optic connections over long distances on land or under sea and for short distances in metropolitan and regional areas, as well as for traffic aggregation of fixed and mobile multi-service networks. In addition, this segment offers microwave transmission systems for mobile backhaul, fixed broadband access, and private applications; and systems hardware, and software platforms and applications for communications service providers, enterprises, and Webscale companies. Its Access segment offers wireless products and services that enable mobile network operators to offer mobile data capacity; small cells to enhance wireless network coverage; cable, antenna, tower systems, and their related electronic components; and fixed access products, which enable service providers to offer ultra-broadband connectivity over digital subscriber lines and fiber connections. This segment also provides licensing services; and build-operate-manage-transfer solutions, operations transformation solutions, and network operations services. The company’s Other segment offers networking, satellite communications, voice-over-IP, optical routers, and other solutions for the United States national security, defense, and advanced research communities. Alcatel-Lucent was founded in 1898 and is headquartered in Boulogne-Billancourt, France.

Vodafone Launches Budget Smart First 6 Phone in Spain Manufactured by Alcatel

Vodafone Spain has launched its own-brand Smart first 6 smartphone, which is available in combination with a number of prepaid and postpaid tariffs. The Alcatel-manufactured handset is available for as little as EUR 34 to prepay customers that have been with the operator for at least 12 months or EUR 59 (including EUR 15 in credit) to new customers. The Smart first 6 smartphone features a 4-inch screen plus the Android KitKat operating system, a 1 GHz dual core processor and 512 MB RAM. It has 4GB of internal storage, expandable up to 32GB, a 3-megapixel camera and is fuelled by a 1,400 mAh battery. The phone is also available for EUR 47 unlocked.

Alcatel-Lucent and Algerian Ministry of Post Announces to Build Orval Undersea Cable System

Alcatel-Lucent and the Algerian Ministry of Post have signed a turnkey agreement for the deployment of the Orval system, an over 560 km fiber-optic undersea cable that will link Oran in Algeria to Valencia, Spain. With completion expected in 2016, the 100 gigabit-per-second system will deliver an ultimate design capacity of 20 terabit-per-seconds. This speed and capacity will facilitate the delivery of broadband services to an estimated 42 million Internet users in Algeria and Spain. Additionally, the Orval submarine cable system is part of the orsec plan which has been put in place by the Algerian Ministry in order to reinforce the ability to face natural disasters such as in the case of the earthquake in 2003 and of which strengthening international communications is a key element.

Wind Telecomunicazioni Selects Alcatel-Lucent Content Delivery Network Technology to Support its Launch of Premium Video and TV Services in Italy

Alcatel-Lucent announced to provide Wind Telecomunicazioni with content delivery network technology to support the launch of new video and TV services for its fixed and mobile subscribers. The provision of Alcatel-Lucents Velocix Content Delivery Network platform will enable Winds customers to manage video traffic on its network, providing an optimized experience for customers regardless of the device they use to access content. With the delivery of video content rapidly moving from traditional broadcasting to content delivered to individuals via a variety of screens and devices, Alcatel-Lucents industrial research arm Bell Labs estimates that online video consumption will have increased twelvefold by 2020, placing considerable strain on fixed and mobile networks. As such, the Velocix platform will provide Wind with the efficiency and agility to manage video traffic as its network grows to accommodate additional demand. This deployment helps position Wind as a key player in the distribution of video content in Italy, and will enable it to bring new services to market. Alcatel-Lucent will deliver its Velocix 7810 Digital Media Delivery Platform, the market leading on-net Content Delivery Network system, used by some of the large operators in the world, including Telus, Oi and Time Warner Cable, among others With video the predominant traffic in any IP-based network infrastructure, Alcatel-Lucents unique understanding and expertise is enabling customers to add intelligence to their networks that improves the customer experience and unlocks revenue potential from new services.
