American Science and Engineering, Inc., together with its subsidiaries, develops, manufactures, markets, and sells X-ray inspection and other detection products for homeland security, force protection, public safety, and other defense applications in the United States and internationally. The company offers cargo inspection systems comprising non-intrusive inspection systems primarily for the screening of trucks, cars, cargo containers, pallets, and air cargo at various locations, including border crossings, seaports, military bases, airports, and cargo and transportation hubs. Its cargo inspection systems consist of OmniView gantry system, a relocatable cargo and vehicle inspection system; Z Portal system, a drive-through inspection system for scanning cargo and vehicles; and Sentry Portal system, a drive through transmission X-ray inspection system to screen cargo containers. The company also provides mobile cargo inspection systems, including Z Backscatter Van, a mobile X-ray screening system to produce photo-like images of the contents of a vehicle or cargo container; and ZBV Military Trailer, a rugged X-ray screening system for screening vehicles, container, and other cargo. In addition, it offers parcel and personnel screening inspection systems, comprising Gemini system, a parcel and baggage inspection system; and SmartCheck system, a personnel screening system for contraband and threats hidden under a person’s clothing. Further, the company provides contract services for the development of custom products primarily for agencies of the U.S. government; and maintenance, warranty, engineering, and training services. It serves authorities responsible for port and border security; customs agencies; military organizations; aviation security agencies; law enforcement agencies; and critical infrastructure and high threat commercial and government facilities. The company was founded in 1958 and is headquartered in Billerica; Massachusetts.

American Science & Engineering Inc.'s Board of Directors has declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.50 per share, payable on June 3, 2015 to the holders of record of the company's common stock at the close of business on May 26, 2015. The company announced unaudited consolidated earnings results for the fourth quarter and full year ended March 31, 2015. For the quarter, the company reported total net sales and contract revenues of $31,167,000 against $65,576,000 a year ago. This decrease in revenues is primarily attributable to decreases in cargo revenue as a large cargo project was completed in the prior period, and a decrease in mobile cargo revenue as there was a large shipment in the prior period, offset somewhat by an increase in fuel services. Operating income was $934,000 against $5,978,000 a year ago. Income before provision for income taxes was $904,000 against $5,947,000 a year ago. Net income was $877,000 or $0.12 per diluted share against $3,955,000 or $0.50 per diluted share a year ago. The company generated $1.9 million of free cash. For the full year, the company reported total net sales and contract revenues of $126,750,000 against $190,249,000 a year ago. This decline was attributable to a decrease across all product lines with cargo decreasing $35.1 million as the prior year included a large port project that completed in that year. Operating income was $1,165,000 against $22,756,000 a year ago. Income before provision for income taxes was $1,047,000 against $22,733,000 a year ago. Net income was $979,000 or $0.13 per diluted share against $15,117,000 or $1.91 per diluted share a year ago. Net cash used for operating activities was $11,136,000 against net cash provided by operating activities of $32,546,000 a year ago. Purchases of property and equipment were $2,580,000 against $1,821,000 a year ago. Cash from operations less CapEx, or free cash, in the current year was a negative $13.7 million as compared to $30.7 million in the prior period.
