abb ltd-reg (ABLZF) Key Developments

ABB Ltd. Wins $90 Million Order from Statoil to Install Cable System

ABB Ltd. has won an order worth around $90 million from Statoil for a high-voltage cable system to supply power from shore to the Johan Sverdrup offshore oil field. Located 155 kilometers (km) west of Stavanger in the North Sea, Johan Sverdrup is considered one of the offshore oil fields on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS). Once fully operational, production is estimated at 550,000 - 650,000 barrels of oil per day, accounting for nearly 40% of total oil production from the NCS. ABB will design, manufacture and install an 80-kilovolt (kV) extruded direct current (DC) cable system with a capacity of 100 megawatts to transmit power from the Norwegian power grid to the Johan Sverdrup offshore production facility.

ABB Wins Orders to Provide Automation Solutions for Solar Plants in India

ABB Ltd. has won orders worth around $18 million to provide plant electrification, automation and substation solutions for solar power plants in India. Spread across the southern Indian states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, these projects will connect more than 850 megawatts (MW) of solar energy to the grid and will be among the biggest solar projects worldwide. The most significant of these projects, placed by the Adani Group, a diversified Indian multinational, is the 648 MW solar plant in Kamuthi, Tamil Nadu. ABB will provide a turnkey solution encompassing the design, supply, installation and commissioning of the power plant electrification and automation systems, the pooling stations and multiple substations. This includes two 230 kilovolt (kV) and three 110 kV substations to connect the electricity generated to the local grid. ABB's Symphony Plus control technology will serve as the 'unified automation platform' for the plant including the electrical systems, the solar inverters and software for plant performance monitoring, maximizing operational efficiency and ensuring grid compliance. The IEC 61850 based automation system will facilitate local and remote monitoring and control of the plant and substation assets and is another example of ABB technologies enabling the Internet of Things, Services and People.

ABB Wins $30 Million Order to Increase Norway's Grid Capacity

ABB has won an order worth around $30 million from Norwegian transmission system operator Statnett SF to supply power transformers that will help to significantly increase the capacity of the country's central power grid, bolstering its energy security and ability to transmit more renewable energy. The order was booked in the second quarter of 2015. The order for nine transformers was booked in the second quarter of 2015. This includes seven 1,000 megavolt ampere 420/300 kV autotransformers and two 300 MVA 420/132 kV power transformers. The transformers will help increase transmission capacity of Norway's main grid and ensure a stable power supply. They will also support the integration of more renewable energy, helping Norway achieve climate targets while delivering clean energy within the country and to the rest of Europe. As part of one of the projects of its kind, Statnett is upgrading the voltage of Norway's main grid from 300 to 420 kV by converting existing 300 kV power lines and substations or by replacing old low-capacity lines with new, higher-capacity lines. Using existing transmission corridors is an environmentally friendly, cost-effective solution to increase grid capacity and reduce losses with little impact on the landscape.
