ABB Ltd. Launches Electric Arc Furnace Stirrer

ABB Ltd. launched ArcSave. ArcSave, a next-generation electric arc furnace electromagnetic stirrer that reportedly improves steel production output. ABB's next generation electric arc furnace electromagnetic stirrer (EAF-EMS), reduces carry over slag and shortens tap-to-tap time while strengthening slag-melt homogenization and increasing yield. It also contributes to safer operations. The product is the result of over five years of R&D. The ArcSave's powerful electromagnetic stirring enhances the melting of large scrap items and makes stratification less significant due to forced convection. The forced convection in the whole melt is instrumental in generating a homogenous temperature distribution and high scrap melting rate. The melt velocity achieved is roughly ten times faster, as compared to just having natural convection in the bath, and results in less power on time. The temperature homogenization further helps manufacturers, not only to obtain an exact tapping temperature for different grades of steel, but also allows smooth tapping without delays.

ABB Not Sure On Sale of Assets

ABB Ltd. (SWX:ABBN) has not made a definitive decision on the sale of its power grids division, Chief Executive Officer Ulrich Spiesshofer told German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in an interview published on Thursday.

ABB Expands Asia Manufacturing Facility with New Switchgear Unit in Indonesia

ABB announced the inauguration of a new manufacturing facility for medium-voltage air-insulated switchgear (AIS), located in Tangerang, 25 kilometers from Indonesia’s capital Jakarta. The move is part of ABB’s $20-million investment plan for Indonesia which includes last year’s opening of a new factory for low-voltage products in Cibitung, West Java. Switchgear produced by the new factory will facilitate efficient and reliable power distribution and help address the increasing demand for electricity, driven by rapid urbanization and a growing industrial sector. In addition to serving the country’s needs, the unit will also serve as an important supply hub for the region. The 3,700 square-meter plant will manufacture a range of medium-voltage AIS such as ABB’s UniSwitch, UniSec, UniGear and UniGear Digital, representing some of the latest innovations in medium-voltage switchgear. The new semi-automated factory has been designed for lean manufacturing operations with the capability to produce over 4,000 switchgear panels a year.
