West Japan Railway Company provides passenger railway transport services in Japan. It operates in three segments: Transportation, Sales of Goods and Food Services, and Real Estate Business. The company operates a railway network that stretches across an area of approximately 104,000 square kilometers covering 18 prefectures in western Honshu and the northern tip of Kyushu comprising a total of 1,222 railway stations with an operating route length of 5,015.7 kilometers. It operates high-speed intercity passenger service between Shin-Osaka station in Osaka and Hakata station in Fukuoka in northern Kyushu with an operating length of 644.0 kilometers covering 19 railway stations. The company’s urban network offers services to the Kyoto–Osaka–Kobe metropolitan area with an operating route length of 946.0 kilometers. West Japan Railway Company also operates other conventional lines with an operating route length of 3,425.7 kilometers comprising intercity transport provided by limited express and express services; regional transport for commuters and students in and around regional hub cities, such as Hiroshima and Okayama; and local lines with low transport density. In addition, the company offers bus and ferry services; operates convenience stores, department stores, specialty stores, and food and beverage outlets; and provides travel agency, advertising agency, hotel, maintenance and engineering, and other services. Further, it is involved in the sale and leasing of residential and urban development properties; management of shopping centers in station buildings and other facilities; operation of large station buildings at hub railway stations; and development of commercial facilities near railway station areas and underneath elevated tracks. West Japan Railway Company was founded in 1987 and is headquartered in Osaka, Japan.

West Japan Railway Co to Launch Harry Potter Shinkansen Train on February 21

West Japan Railway Co., or JR West, announced that it will launch on February 21 a Shinkansen bullet train decorated with images featuring the Wizarding World of Harry Potter area opened last July at Universal Studios Japan, a popular movie theme park in the western Japan city of Osaka. The Harry Potter train will run on JR West's Sanyo Shinkansen Line and Kyushu Railway Co.'s Kyushu Shinkansen Line. It will run mainly as the Sakura No. 580 train Saturday mornings from Kagoshima-Chuo Station on the Kyushu Shinkansen Line to Shin-Osaka Station on the Sanyo Shinkansen Line or as the Hikari No. 580 train bound for Shin-Osaka from Hakata Station on the Kyushu Shinkansen Line, also on Saturday mornings. The Harry Potter images to appear on the train will include Hogwarts Castle and Harry's pet owl Hedwig.

West Japan Railway Company reported consolidated and non-consolidated earnings results for the nine months ended December 31, 2014. For the nine months, on consolidated basis, the company reported operating revenues of JPY 996,841 million compared to JPY 985,942 million a year ago. Operating income was JPY 134,307 million compared to JPY 120,875 million a year ago. Recurring profit was JPY 118,924 million compared to JPY 101,894 million last year. Net income was JPY 79,680 million or JPY 411.56 per share compared to JPY 60,786 million or JPY 313.91 per share a year ago. Income before income taxes was JPY 119,785 million compared to JPY 99,881 million a year ago. Total capital expenditure was JPY 132.4 billion compared to JPY 91.9 billion last year. For the nine months, on non-consolidated basis, the company reported operating revenues of JPY 670.7 billion compared to JPY 658.1 billion a year ago. Operating income was JPY 111.1 billion compared to JPY 97.7 billion a year ago. Recurring profit was JPY 93.6 billion compared to JPY 78.8 billion last year. Net income was JPY 61.5 billion compared to JPY 48.1 billion a year ago. Income before income taxes was JPY 89.8 billion compared to JPY 78.1 billion a year ago. Total capital expenditure was JPY 110.5 billion compared to JPY 78.9 billion last year. For the year ending March 31, 2015, on non-consolidated basis, the company expects operating revenues of JPY 886,500 million, operating income of JPY 108,000 million, recurring profit of JPY 88,000 million, and net income of JPY 55,000 million or JPY 283.89 per share compared to previous guidance for the operating revenues of JPY 881.0 billion, operating income of JPY 101.5 billion, recurring profit of JPY 81.5 billion, and net income of JPY 50.0 billion. Capital expenditures, excluding contributions received for constructions are to be JPY 188.0 billion. Income before income taxes is to be JPY 79.5 billion.
