Olympus Corporation Announces Launch of its New Z Drift Compensator IX3-ZDC2 for More Efficient Imaging on the Inverted Research Microscope IX83

Olympus Corporation announced the progressive international launch by its Scientific Solutions Business of its new Z Drift Compensator IX3-ZDC2 for more efficient imaging on the inverted research microscope IX83, and the new imaging software cellSens v1.14 of its for biological microscopes, commencing on October 1, 2015. The IX3 Series of inverted research microscopes (IX83, IX73, and IX53) are designed to support live cell imaging for the observation of living cells. In addition to the excellent performance of the microscope itself, they also feature a high expandability to meet various requirements, such as switchover among observation methods or image capturing, through the addition of various application-specific functions or units. The new IX3-ZDC2 unit is for the IX83. Used in conjunction with the cellSens v1.14, it offers live cell imaging with microplates and provides a more efficient and seamless workflow all the way from image capture to measurement, analysis, and report creation. Keeps the acquired images sharp and focused by continuously detecting the distance between the objective lens and sample container. The use of near-infra-red light with low phototoxicity for focusing minimizes damage to cells, meaning that time-lapse imaging can be used to observe the changes in cells over a long period of time. A single plate that contains a large number of equal-sized wells spaced at regular intervals. Plates are available in a variety of configurations (with 6, 24, or 96 wells, for example), and are useful for the simultaneous culturing and observation of multiple cells, such as comparing reactions to different agents. In the fields of regenerative medicine and drug discovery different types of cells including iPS and other stem cells are produced for research use through a continuous culturing process. Microplates are a common container used for this purpose. Through improvement of its internal optics, the IX3-ZDC2 is able to perform rapid focusing and complete high-speed imaging in approximately two minutes for a 96-well microplate. This enables the efficient imaging of a large number of wells. In addition to glass bottom dishes, the IX3-ZDC2 also supports the use of plastic bottom dishes, which provides excellent cost-performance in a wide range of uses. Advanced Microscopy Inc. Enters into Patent License Agreement with Olympus Corporation

WiLAN has announced that its subsidiary, Advanced Microscopy Inc. has entered into a patent license agreement with Olympus Corporation. The license relates to technology that provides enhanced image processing capabilities. It has potential applications including, but not limited to, life sciences, material sciences, and semiconductor research. This is the second license WiLAN has secured to this portfolio since its acquisition. Under its licensing partnership model, WiLAN typically offers little to no upfront payment to acquire portfolios. Patent vendors receive all or most of their compensation once WiLAN has successfully licensed the relevant portfolio. The license resolves litigation pending in the District of Delaware. The settlement and terms of the license agreement are confidential.

Olympus Announces New Firmware Upgrades for Version 4.0 for the Olympus OM-D E-M1 and Version 2.0 for the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II, Two New Cameras Set to Release for Late November 2015

Olympus Corporation has announced the new firmware upgrades for two cameras, which will be released for late November 2015 - Version 4.0 for the Olympus OM-D E-M1 and Version 2.0 for the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II. This upgrade not only adds new functions found on the OM-D E-M10 Mark II announced on August 25, but also adds new features worthy of high-end models. At the same time, Version 1.1 of Olympus Capture will be released to meet demands from professionals, and the latest firmware update for M.Zuiko Pro and Premium lenses will also be released. The OM-D E-M1 is the Olympus Compact System Camera, with dustproof, splashproof, and freezeproof performance. Not only are functions available on the OM-D E-M5 Mark II and OM-D E-M10 Mark II being added, but the latest function, focus stacking mode is being added for further advancement. Functions available on the OM-D E-M10 Mark II and the latest functions will also be added to the OM-D E-M5 Mark II to achieve the further advanced OM-D Movie. Along with this latest firmware upgrade, the latest firmware for the M.Zuiko Pro and Premium lenses will also be released. Support for aperture control suitable for movie shooting and the ability to disable MF clutch and Snapshot Focus has been added. Features and performance of the high-end models will continue to be upgraded through firmware updates. The new features added in firmware upgrade includes: Focus Stacking Mode (OM-D E-M1 only); Focus Bracketing Mode; S-OVF (Simulated OVF); Movie-Exclusive Picture Mode: Flat (OM-D E-M5 Mark II only); Synchronized PCM Audio Rec. with Movie Recording; Enhanced functions on Olympus Capture Version 1.1; MF Clutch and Snapshot Focus Disable; and Latest firmware for M.Zuiko Pro and Premium lenses. Focus Stacking Mode lets users to shoot macro photos that are completely in focus at all depths. A single press of the shutter button captures 8 shots with different focal positions, automatically merging them into a single shot on the camera. Depth of field larger than that of minimum aperture and high resolution without diffraction can be achieved. Focus Bracketing Mode function captures up to 999 shots with the focus position for each shot being changed, allowing to use photo retouching software to merge the images with larger depth of field that cannot be achieved in focus stacking mode (8 shots). S-OVF enables a view that is similar to that of an optical viewfinder. Exposure compensation and white balance are purposely not shown in S-OVF so that users who are comfortable with the optical viewfinder in DSLR cameras can use the camera in the exact same way. Movie-Exclusive Picture Mode Flat provides beautiful post-editing or grading color by lowering the contrast to minimize highlight blowouts and loss of detail in shadows. Synchronized PCM Audio Rec. with Movie Recording functions have been added for shooting movies when connecting Olympus Linear PCM Recorder LS-100 via USB cable. Slate Tone can be added to make it easier to synchronize the audio and image after recording is complete, and a function for synchronizing the start of audio recording with movie recording on the camera is also available. Users can customize the display of items on the Super Control Panel so that only the required functions are displayed, and one can change the layout for easier access of the most frequently used functions. Direct PC saving is also available and the transfer speed is made faster by saving images directly to a computer without recording to an SD card. Transfer speed is improved up to 4 times faster than before. Tether shooting capabilities are also expanded. Features such as Keystone Compensation are now available to operate via a computer by connecting the camera to a computer. The users can change settings from the menu to disable MF Clutch and Snapshot Focus. Along with this latest firmware upgrade, latest firmware for the M.Zuiko Pro and Premium lenses will also be released. Aperture drive has been improved for smooth exposure control even when shooting movies in situations with sudden changes in brightness. It also supports for disabling the MF Clutch and Snapshot Focus.
