Sony Corporation Announces Expansion Plans for 2015

Sony Corporation announced expansion plans for 2015. Fiscal year 2015 forecast for Semiconductor CapEx is JPY 290 billion. The company expects to use JPY 210 billion of the JPY 290 billion to expand production capacity for image sensors. A large part of the remainder will be used for camera modules production capacity.

Sony Corporation Announces Consolidated Earnings Results for the Fourth Quarter and Full Year Ended March 2015; Provides Earnings Guidance for the Current Fiscal Year 2015; Plan to Issue Interim Dividend for the Fiscal Year 2015

Sony Corporation announced consolidated earnings results for the fourth quarter and full year ended March 2015. For the January-to-March quarter, the company posted a net loss of JPY 106.8 billion, compared with a net loss of JPY 138.2 billion in the same period last year. The company also booked an operating loss of JPY 99.8 billion for the three-month period, compared with an operating loss of JPY 111.8 billion a year before, while sales grew 3.6% to JPY 1.938 trillion. For the year to March 2015, the company ended the previous financial year through March with a net loss attributable to the company’s stockholders was JPY 126 billion, essentially flat year-on-year, compared with a net loss of JPY 128.4 billion the year before. In fiscal year 2014, consolidated sales increased 5.8% year-on-year to JPY 8,215.9 billion due to the impact of depreciation of the yen. Consolidated operating income was JPY 68.5 billion, 2.6x higher than that of the previous fiscal year. In fiscal year 2014, consolidated sales increased 5.8% year-on-year primarily due to the impact of the depreciation of the yen. For the current fiscal year to March 2016, the company expects to return to black after three years, the company expects a net profit of JPY 140 billion for the current financial year 2016, the first positive result in three years, due to strong sales of image sensors and a weaker yen. The company also expected an operating profit of JPY 320 billion for the year through March 2016, although sales would be JPY 7.9 trillion, down 3.8% year-on-year. The company is continuing to invest in production capacity for Semiconductors. The company’s fiscal year 2015 CapEx budget is JPY 290 billion. JPY 210 billion of that amount is investment in image sensors. And the vast majority of the difference, the JPY 80 billion, is investment for camera modules that will be made in Kumamoto TEC. Its image sensor CapEx is focused on production capacity for back-illuminated stacked-type analog technology. This business is not impacted by the silicon cycle of an edge process technology, and the company expects it does not suffer from easy obsolescence. Fiscal year 2015 sales and operating income are expected to increase significantly.
