Sharp Corporation to Settle a Trademark Dispute with Sharp Industries

Sharp Corporation to settle a trademark dispute amicably with Sharp Industries. Sharp has been fighting a pitched battle against the 'Sharp' trademark for motor pumps of Sharp Industries, for quite some time now, had been told by the Intellectual Appellate Board (IPAB) to find an amicable settlement in consultation with the opponent. When the matter was taken up at the IPAB, counsels of both the companies expressed the inability to report the settlement, as was planned earlier, due to some thorny issues. Sharp Corporation's counsel Arun C Mohan submitted that though both the companies have been in discussion to resolve the issue, apprehensions over Sharp Industries' exports under the Sharp No.1 mark and the likelihood of further expansion of the product-basket beyond the mono-block pumps at a later stage, have been the stumbling blocks in arriving at a consensus.
