NEC Corporation Develops Groundbreaking Silicon Integrated Optical Switch Technology

NEC Corporation developed groundbreaking silicon integrated optical switch technology whose port count can be extended flexibly according to network size. This has been achieved by reducing optical insertion loss in compact, low-power optical switch modules that utilize silicon photonics-based optical integration technologies. In this latest advancement, NEC has developed a spot size converter that optically couples silicon optical circuits and optical fibers with different light beam radiuses (spot sizes), dramatically reducing optical coupling loss to approximately one-tenth of previous levels. This improvement means that high capacity optical signals can be split into a larger number of branches owing to reducing optical coupling loss at optical switches. As a result, by adding switch modules, the number of optical switch input or output ports can be expanded by approximately ten times when compared with previous offerings, which allows the development of optical networks that are highly resilient to demand fluctuations and failures. The main features of the technology: Development of a groundbreaking low-loss optical switch module that can be applied to optical networks Using narrow silicon optical waveguides, compact and low-power optical switch functions have been integrated on silicon optical circuit chips with a high density. NEC developed a new proprietary spot size converter that optically couples silicon optical circuits and optical fibers with different light beam radiuses (spot sizes), drastically reducing optical coupling loss between silicon optical circuit chips and optical fibers down to approximately one-tenth of previous levels.

Toshima Ward of Tokyo Selects NEC Corporation to Provide Crowd Behavior Analysis Technology

NEC Corporation has received an order from Toshima Ward of Tokyo for a comprehensive disaster control system construction project, which will incorporate crowd behavior analysis technologies that utilizes security camera footage to understand the behavior of crowds and to detect abnormalities. This system is scheduled to come into service in May 2015. NEC's crowd behavior analysis technology supports the company's view towards building a safe and secure society and its vision for urban development leading up to and beyond 2020, including busy terminal stations, airports, theme parks, stadiums and event venues.

Avea Selects NEC Corporation's Small Cell Gateway Solution

NEC Corporation has announced that Avea has selected NEC's small cell gateway solution to help its customers increase their mobile connectivity at home and work. The company has also begun pilots of an innovative solution that dramatically reduces the cost of enterprise-grade multi-mode 3G and 4G connectivity to boost workplace productivity. Mobile users often face challenges using their mobiles due to the signal blocking properties of the concrete, stone, steel and tinted glass used to construct many homes and offices. This problem is compounded by the fact that higher frequency, shorter range 3G and 4G signals have lower indoor penetration capabilities than previous generations of technology. Avea will use NEC's small cell gateway - which sits between the operator's network core and the Internet Service Provider's broadband network - to manage tens of thousands of residential femtocells and enterprise-grade indoor small cells to address this issue. It aggregates indoor small cell networks into a standardized lu interface connected into the mobile core network to streamline deployment and management activities for the operator. Avea has successfully completed pilot testing of the innovative Enterprise RAN (E-RAN) solution from NEC and SpiderCloud to provide innovative multimode LTE and 3G connectivity for enterprises. Using an enterprise's existing Ethernet infrastructure, E-RAN avoids the expense, and lengthy disruption of coaxial cable installation works, CAT6/7 Ethernet re-wiring and specialist indoor radio planning. As it uses only a fraction of the power of a Distributed Antenna System (DAS) by removing the need for dedicated air-conditioning units, operating costs are dramatically reduced.
