toshiba corp (6502) Key Developments

Toshiba Corporation Announces Launch of TB9081FG

Toshiba Corporation announced the launch of TB9081FG, a brushless motor pre-driver IC enhanced to achieve functional safety, for use in electric power steering systems (EPS). Sample shipments will start on September 1, 2015, with mass production scheduled to start in August, 2017. More and more safety-critical automotive systems, such as EPS, are required to meet the requirements of ASIL-D, the higher automotive safety integrity level prescribed in ISO 26262, Road Vehicles Functional Safety. The new IC integrates key main functions, including 3-phase pre-drivercircuits, fail-safe relay pre-driver circuits and motor current detection circuits, plus various failure detection circuits. An initial diagnosis circuit to detect latent faults in the failure detection circuits is also incorporated to secure higher functional safety. Toshiba has also carried out a range of functional safety analyses to simulate various system failures and will provide customers with documentation, such as FMEDA, to support safety analysis and design. Key features: Built-in VB over/under voltage detection circuit, VCC over/under voltage detection circuit, over temperature detection circuits, and short detection circuits; diagnosis circuit for failure detection circuits for functional safety A built-in diagnostic circuit in the failure-detection circuit detects any latent faults; built-in fail-safe relay pre-driver circuits drive the semiconductor relay connected between the motor and MOSFET (driver) and between the power-supply side and MOSFET (driver). The fail-safe relay pre-driver circuit has a total of 5ch, three for the motor side and two for the power-supply side. Both have dedicated input terminals, making independent control possible; voltage drop caused by cranking after idling reduction is accommodated by improving battery operation voltage range down to 4.5V (min.); customers can set the system to respond to detected failures in one of two ways, using the input setting of the SPI communication. One setting uses this new IC to stop the external MOSFET, the other switches to external control of the MOSFET using the MCU (Micro Controller Unit). Selection can be made according to the customer's application or system, and for various systems.

Toshiba Corp. Eyes Appointing Shiseido Adviser Maeda as Board Chairman

Toshiba Corp. announced that it is considering naming Shinzo Maeda, senior adviser to cosmetics maker Shiseido Co., as chairman of its revamped board in order to improve corporate governance. The new 11-member board is expected to have seven outside directors, including Maeda, up from four before the scandal surfaced.

Toshiba Corporation to Provide High Performance Propulsion Systems for New Series 40000 Trains

Toshiba Corporation will provide high performance propulsion systems for new Series 40000 trains that Seibu Railway Co. Ltd. will bring into service on lines serving Tokyo and its suburbs in spring of 2017. The propulsion systems comprise totally enclosed permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) and 4-in-1 variable-voltage, variable-frequency (VVVF) traction inverters. Toshiba will deliver 24 sets of propulsion systems for eight ten-car trains. This is the company’s first volume order for propulsion systems for Seibu trains, and delivery is scheduled to start in spring of 2016. The PMSM delivers a series of unchallenged benefits, starting with a rated energy efficiency of 97%. The motor’s totally enclosed design eliminates the need for cleaning during its service life and minimizes maintenance, and its 4-in-1 VVVF inverter system, which integrates two 4-in-1 inverter units with inverter circuits for each cooling unit, is smaller and lighter than the typical systems now in use. Perhaps most important, the propulsion system cuts power consumption by 30% to 50%, compared to Toshiba’s preceding system, as the inverter system can drive up to eight PMSMs, significantly reducing traction power consumption, and Toshiba’s proprietary control system for regenerative braking harvests more energy and boosts the overall energy efficiency of the trains.
