China Talks with Mitsubishi Materials Corp. on Lawsuit for Wartime Forced Labor in Japan Halted

Lawyers for Chinese who have sued Mitsubishi Materials Corp. for being forced to work in Japan under harsh conditions during the wartime that talks with the company to settle the litigation will be suspended. Mitsubishi has declined to accept a demand by the plaintiffs that the company recognize its legal responsibility for the forced labor. The settlement talks started after the suit was filed with a court in Beijing in February 2014. Mitsubishi has offered to recognize its historical responsibility as their employer and apologize. The company has also proposed paying CNY 100,000 per plaintiff and making contributions to a fund. The plaintiffs have rejected the proposals as being insufficient and insisted that Mitsubishi clarify its legal responsibility for promoting, implementing and benefitting from the forced labor. The company has turned down the demand. In the suit, 40 plaintiffs, including bereaved families of former laborers, demand that Mitsubishi Materials and Nippon Coke & Engineering Co. apologize and pay CNY 1 million in compensation per person. This is one in a series of lawsuits filed in China last year against the Japanese government and Japanese companies for forced labor in Japan during World War II.
