Hyundai Announces Earnings Results for the Year 2014; Provides Sales Guidance for the Year 2015

Hyundai announced earnings results for the year 2014. For the year, the company has reported a 15% year-on-year fall in its 2014 net earnings as solid vehicle sales gains at home and in China were more than offset by the South Korean won's sharp appreciation against most global currencies and increased discounts on ageing models in the United States. During the year, the company’s net profit declined 14.9% year on year to KRW 7.65, compared with KRW 8.99 trillion in 2013. Operating profit dropped 9.2% year on year to KRW 7.56 trillion from KRW 8.32 trillion during 2013, while sales revenues stood at KRW 89.26 trillion, up slightly by 2.2% year on year from KRW 87.31 trillion in the previous year. This decline in net profit came despite the fact that Hyundai managed to achieve modest growth of 4% year on year in its global sales volumes (retail basis) last year. Globally, its vehicle sales in 2014 stood at 4.805 million units, of which domestic sales accounted for 684,000 units while overseas sales totaled 4.121 million units, representing increases of 6.7% year on year and 3.5% year on year, respectively. The company is aiming to sell 5.05 million units in global markets during 2015. Of this total, South Korean sales are expected to total 1.87 million units (up 0.5% year on year), split between domestic sales of 690,000 units (up 0.9% year on year), and export sales of 1.179 million units (down 1.3% year on year). Sales in China are predicted at 1.16 million units (up 3.6% year on year), followed by India with 635,000 units (up 3.6% year on year), the United States with 390,000 units (down 1.5% year on year), Turkey with 215,000 units (up 5.9% year on year), and other general markets with 781,000 units (up 4% year on year).

Hyundai Plans to Launch New Veloster Coupe

Hyundai announced that it will launch the new Veloster coupe in South Korea in month January 2015. The upgraded Veloster, on sale from tomorrow, is equipped with an 'engine sound equalizer' that allows the driver to tune the volume and tone of the 'virtual' engine's sound. The new Veloster also features motor-driven power steering and has better safety features such as a rollover sensor that automatically activates airbags in case the car is inverted. The D-spec version of the new model is priced at KRW 23.7 million which is KRW 900,000 more than its predecessor. Hyundai also reported that its seven-speed, double-clutch transmission helps improve fuel efficiency by 4% better than the previous Veloster to 12.3 kilometres per litre. The upgraded version has been incorporated with features more in tune with the taste of the young consumer in South Korea. The sale of the previous version of the Veloster commenced in April 2011 and it did reasonably well with a tally of 11,284 units in its launch year. The C-segment hatchback is built on the PB platform and IHS Automotive forecasts its sales to reach nearly 5,300 units in 2015.
