Toyota Motor Corporation, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., Honda Motor Co., Ltd., JXTG Nippon Oil & Energy, Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd., Iwatani Corporation, Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd., Toho Gas Co., Ltd., Air Liquide Japan Ltd., Toyota Tsusho Corporation and Development Bank of Japan Inc. have signed a memorandum of understanding on collaboration toward the large-scale construction of hydrogen stations for fuel cell vehicles. The memorandum of understanding is aimed at achieving the acceleration of the construction of hydrogen stations in the current early stage of FCV commercialization using an "all Japan" approach centered on collaboration among the 11 companies. It stems from the Japanese government's "Strategic Roadmap for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells"(1) (revised on March 22, 2016), which targets a total of 160 operational hydrogen stations and 40,000 in-use FCVs by fiscal 2020. Recognizing the challenges facing the hydrogen station business in early-stage commercialization of FCVs, the memorandum of understanding is based on the idea that the companies concerned should cooperate and fulfill their respective roles to achieve the strategic development of hydrogen stations for maximizing FCV demand and to contribute to the steady popularization of FCVs. As a specific form of such cooperation, the 11 companies will consider establishing a new company within 2017. The new company would aim to, achieve steady construction of hydrogen stations by implementing measures to support hydrogen-station construction and operation, and achieve wider use of FCVs and the independence of the hydrogen station business through activities for reducing costs, including governmental review of regulations, and activities for improving operational efficiencies, thus contributing to the realization of a hydrogen society in Japan. The 11 companies will consider ways for broad participation by other companies in the future and will disseminate information appropriately.

Toyota Motor Corp, BMW, Mazda, and Subaru Disclose Agreements to Settle Claims in the Takata Multidistrict Litigation in the United States

Toyota Motor Corp, BMW, Mazda, and Subaru have disclosed agreements to settle claims in the Takata multidistrict litigation in the United States. The automakers jointly agreed to provide about $553 million for the claimants. The programs offered under the agreements to resolve the economic loss are intended to increase recall remedy completion rates for Takata airbag inflators, among other customer benefits. Given the size, scope and severity of the Takata recall, these automakers are the first to agree to a settlement structure to fund consumer outreach, rental car/loaner programs and out-of-pocket cost reimbursement. The proposed settlements are yet to be approved by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

Toyota Launches Restroom Information Service Across Japan

Toyota Motor Corporation will launch a service that enables users to search for information on public accessible restrooms1 which are located at rest stops on highways, general roads, as well as at public and cultural facilities nationwide. Route guidance to the restrooms will also be provided. The service will be added to TC Smartphone Navigation2, a navigation application for smartphones. The service provides information of approximately 19,000 public accessible restrooms located at a range of locations, such as highway service areas, rest areas, "highway oasis" recreation areas, Michi-no-Eki (roadside rest areas across Japan), municipal offices, art and other museums, Welcab Stations3 among others, so as to enable wheelchair users and disabled people to be able to have a stress-free and comfortable journey. The service displays the locations of the relevant facilities which are near the user's vehicle, and provides route information to the selected facility on the user's smartphone. Furthermore, detailed information are provided, such as the availability of disabled parking at the facilities, if there are steps at the restroom's entrance, as well as the types of handrails installed among others. Toyota created the Restroom Finder application as a part of its application lineup provided exclusively by the T-Connect and Lexus G-Link telematics services. It has provided the service in three Tokai prefectures (Aichi, Gifu, and Mie) for approximately two years from May 2015 to March 2017. The service launched this time will expand the coverage of information on public accessible restrooms across Japan, and will be available free of charge for all smartphone users. This will help to enhance convenience, with the aim of providing reassuring and convenient mobility support services to an even broader range of users. Going forward, Toyota will continue enhancing TC Smartphone Navigation services as tools that would help to support the mobility-based lifestyles of consumers.
