Toyota Invests USD 37 Million to Expand Capacity at Brazilian Plant

Toyota is planning to invest BRL 100 million (USD 37 million) to expand capacity at its Sorocaba plant in Brazil, including hiring about 400 new workers. Production will be increased by 46%, from 74,000 units to 108,000 units beginning in 2016. Toyota currently builds the Etios at the facility, both the sedan and the hatchback. Toyota executive Percival Donato Maiante reportedly attributed the increase to the popularity of the Etios, which enabled the company to grow sales in 2014, while most manufacturers were harder hit by the Brazilian market's overall sales contraction. Toyota says the plant operated above capacity in 2014 to meet demand, and that about 20,000 vehicles were exported.
