Alps Electric Introduces “SKSWD Series” TACT Switch™

Alps Electric has developed and added to its product lineup the "SKSWD Series" TACT SwitchTM with IP68 dust and water resistance, ideal for integration into wearable computers, healthcare devices and smartphones. Electronic devices worn on the body such as wearable computers and healthcare devices are becoming smaller and increasingly sophisticated. Often exposed to sweat and rain, dust and dirt, these devices require components which are light and compact and achieve high dust and water resistance. Alps Electric has responded to these needs, adding to its product lineup the SKSWD Series TACT SwitchTM. The switch is in the industry's smallest class and provides high dust and water resistance (IP68). It has compact dimensions of 3.0 × 2.0mm and a low profile, with a height of 0.6mm. Mass production began in September. Switches of around this size for use in mobile devices generally have an IP67equivalent dust and water resistance rating. For the SKSWD Series, however, Alps Electric used original design and manufacturing technology to achieve even better dust resistance and an IP68 rating without making any major structural changes to the product. This level of dust and water resistance is an industry first for compact switches with a similar configuration. Alps Electric Develops SPVQD Series Waterproof Detector Switch with Internal Resistors

Alps Electric has developed the 'SPVQD Series' Waterproof Detector Switch with Internal Resistors, suitable for detecting the opening and closing of automobile doors, trunks and hoods. Samples will be made available from September 2015. A growing number of vehicle models in today’s automobile market are equipped with idle stop (start–stop) systems that help to improve fuel efficiency. For safety reasons, the automatic engine restart function of an idle stop system is suspended while doors are opened and closed. Sometimes, however, when there is a technical fault such as a broken circuit, the idle stop system will not activate. To bring out a vehicle’s full fuel efficiency potential, a mechanism is required to both accurately detect open or closed status and quickly detect breaks, shorts or other abnormalities in surrounding circuits. Detection typically employs an open/closed detection switch combined with a resistor (or resistors). Circuit breaks or shorts are detected from abnormal output voltage values during on–off switching. Earlier switches have primarily used external lead-type resistors that are soldered to the open/closed detection circuit, but issues remained, such as the occurrence of soldering defects and faulty water resistance sealing. The SPVQD Series contributes to quality consistency and circuit downsizing by incorporating chip-type resistors actually inside the switch package while retaining the same dimensions (15.2 × 6.4 × 7.45mm) as the existing SPVQA Series. This also allows the customer to omit processes for affixing external resistors. As up to three resistors can be mounted, facilitating a wide range of resistance settings, the product also helps to improve design freedom. Furthermore, the detector employs a 'clip' type double-sided sliding contact structure that clamps a fixed contact from both sides. This was achieved through application of Alps Electric’s proprietary precision processing technology. The configuration enables high contact reliability with strong particulate, vibration and impact resistance. The dust and water resistance rating of the SPVQD Series is IP67. An IP Code (or International Protection Rating) expresses levels of protection against the ingress of solid foreign objects and against the ingress of water. 'IP67' indicates no ingress of dust and no effects from immersion in water at a depth of one meter for 30 minutes. Alps Electric Develops the HSFPAR Series Force Sensor

Alps Electric has developed the ‘HSFPAR Series’ Force Sensor, ideal for force sensing in input devices and posture control in industrial equipment and robots, using MEMS technology to achieve the industry's smallest size. Mass production is already underway. Demand for high-precision pen-shaped input devices (stylus pens) has been growing recently with the rising popularity of digital drawing and painting. Stylus pens, or styli, contain force sensors that are used to trace the trajectory of the pen tip, as well as to reproduce different thicknesses in the artwork corresponding to the pressure applied. To enable smoother tone transitions, however, styli require sensors with high resolution, leading to pen shafts that are too thick. The Internet of Things (IoT) and robot markets have also drawn a lot of attention in recent years and demand for compact, highly sensitive force sensors for applications like load detection on touch or contact, and load balance and grip strength control is expected to rise. Force sensors are generally either semiconductor strain gauge or metallic strain gauge types, and both have their issues. Semiconductor strain gauge force sensors offer high precision, but are big. Metallic strain gauge force sensors, on the other hand, are low sensitivity. Responding to these issues, Alps Electric has developed and commenced mass production of an exceptionally versatile, high-precision force sensor, the HSFPAR Series. The force sensor was developed by applying to a semiconductor strain gauge original MEMS and packaging technologies built up over the years. Not only does the HSFPAR Series have outstanding compact, low-profile dimensions of 2.00 × 1.60 × 0.66mm, the sensor can detect stress as low as 0.01N, enabling high-precision sensing of, for example, minor variations in pen pressure and load shift in robots. The HSFPAR Series is also available as a unit type with a FPC included for easy integration into end products. It is suitable for diverse applications, including such input devices as styli and touch panels, as well as industrial equipment and robots.
