Kao Corporation develops and sells consumer and chemical products in Japan and internationally. The company operates through four segments: Beauty Care Business, Human Health Care Business, Fabric and Home Care Business, and Chemical Business. The Beauty Care Business segment offers cosmetics; skin and body care products, such as facial and body cleansers; and hair care products, including shampoos and conditioners, and hair styling agents, as well as hair coloring and permanent wave products under the brands Sofina, Kanebo, Molton Brown, Bioré, Jergens, Asience, John Frieda, and Goldwell. The Human Health Care Business segment provides functional health beverages; feminine and baby care products, such as sanitary napkins and baby diapers; and oral care products under the Laurier, Merries, Pyuora, Clear Clean, and Bub brand names. The Fabric and Home Care Business segment offers fabric care products, including laundry detergents, fabric softener, and bleaching agents; and home care products comprising dishwashing detergents and house cleaning products under the Attack, Haiter, Magiclean, Humming, Family, CuCute, and Quickle brand names. The Chemical Business segment provides oleo chemicals; performance chemicals; specialty chemicals; and fat and oil derivatives and surfactants, functional polymers, and fragrances under the brands KALCOL, EMAL, MIGHTY, and TUFTONE. This segment serves the paper and pulp, food products, pharmaceutical products, electronics, civil engineering and construction, information media, electronics, and other industries. The company was formerly known as Kao Soap Co., Ltd. and changed its name to Kao Corporation in 1982. Kao Corporation was founded in 1887 and is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.

Kao Corporation Opens New Cosmetics Research Facility at its Odawara Complex Cosmetics Research and Production Site in Odawara City

On September 7, 2016, Kao Corporation opened a new research facility, Beauty Research & Innovation Center, at its Odawara Complex cosmetics research and production site in Odawara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. The Odawara Complex will have the largest range of research functions of any cosmetics research and production site in Asia. Unique Features of the Beauty Research & Innovation Center. The center concentrates the Kao Group's cosmetic research functions in one location. The building features un-partitioned workspaces on each floor, with open internal staircases connecting all floors. This layout facilitates communication, enabling Kao to make research advances by maximizing use of the Kao Group's research assets and to further develop each brand's unique identity by deepening cross-departmental understanding. Kao will also undertake innovative research using a combination of scientific and Kansei research approaches. Kao's Beauty Research & Innovation Center is the first R&D facility belonging to a Japanese company to use functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) technology. Using fMRI, Kao researchers can work towards innovative value creation by making visible and analyzing neural processes such as emotion, affect and decision-making. Kao aims to create value in the realm of beauty that is not only grounded in deep scientific expertise but also captivating on an emotional and sensory level. Within the grounds of the research center, Kao has also built COCOLAB, an interactive laboratory that allows people to see and experience Kansei values that are difficult to express in language, such as beauty and emotion.
