China Eastern Airlines Corp. Ltd. provided earnings guidance for the first half ended June 30, 2015. The company expects net profit attributable to the equity holders of the company for the first half of 2015 to be RMB 3.5 billion to RMB 3.7 billion, representing an increase of 24900% to 26329% as compared to the corresponding period last year. Reason for the increase in profit for the current period are: During the first half of 2015, benefiting from the factors such as continual low international crude oil prices, the adjustment of China's economic structure and consumption upgrade of residents, there was strong demand for the aviation market; the Company has further enhanced its capabilities in corporate operation and management, such as operation coordination, analysis of the market and cost control to better seize market opportunities; and the company has steadily pushed forward various reforms and transformations, thereby increasing its competitiveness persistently.

China Eastern Airlines announced it plans to buy 50 new Boeing B737 series aircraft for about $4.55 billion. The aircraft will be delivered in stages, with 10 to be delivered in 2017, 25 in 2018 and 15 in 2019.

Talk Renews Over Merger of China's Airline Cargo Operations

Talk of consolidation in China's airline sector has renewed with the cargo operations of the three largest state-owned airlines said to be the subject of a merger plan. Xinhua reported on June 24, 2015, the cargo operations of China Southern Airlines Co. Ltd. (SHSE:600029), China Eastern Airlines Corp. Ltd. (SEHK:670), Air China Limited (SEHK:753) would be merged "to form the largest cargo operator in Asia", citing Zhou Laizhen, a Deputy Director of the Civil Aviation Administration of China. But a CAAC spokeswoman on June 25, 2015, denied Zhou had made such remarks. "I do not know where Xinhua's source is," she said, adding the CAAC would have no oversight of any merger of the three state-owned enterprises. Ray Lo, a director at Air China Cargo, said, "I have not heard of this." Two senior cargo managers at China Eastern and China Southern similarly said they were not aware of such plans.
