West Morgan-East Lawrence Water and Sewer Authority and Customers of North Alabama Water Authority File Lawsuit Against 3M Company, Dyneon and Daikin America

Customers of a north Alabama water authority filed a lawsuit that states that 3M Company has known for at least 14 years that chemicals being discharged into the Tennessee River are not effectively treated by conventional wastewater treatment plant processes. The lawsuit claims 3M assured the Decatur-based water authority in 2009 that documented levels of pollution posed no threat to its customers. The authority's customers live in Morgan, Lawrence, Colbert, Franklin, Winston and Cullman counties. In addition to 3M, the suit names as defendants 3M subsidiary Dyneon plus Daikin America. The water authority is asking to be awarded more than $75,000, while the plaintiffs and members of the class action are seeking more than $5 million. The lawsuit centers on the alleged leaking of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and related chemicals into the Tennessee River from Decatur manufacturing plants. Those compounds are used by 3M to create ScotchGuard and Teflon coatings for consumer products.
