U-Haul International, Inc. Key Developments

U-Haul International, Inc. Plans for First Rancho Dominguez Facility

U-Haul International, Inc. is putting its adaptive reuse practices to use by transforming a former Modway Furniture building into its first company-owned and -operated store in Rancho Dominguez. Once construction is completed, there will be 1,426 indoor self-storage units with climate-control options. The 84,396-square-foot building will incorporate all of U-Haul company's security features. While waiting for permanent self-storage units, customers are encouraged to use U-Box containers as temporary self-storage units. By reusing the furniture warehouse, a U-Haul sustainability study reveals it prevented 384 tons of metal manufacturing and transportation from being used; avoided 4,802 tons of new concrete pours; kept 5,239 tons of construction and demolition debris out of landfills; and stopped 3,479,852 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from entering the atmosphere. The acquisition of the Rancho Dominguez facility was driven by U-Haul company's corporate sustainability initiatives.

U-Haul Ceases Operations at its American Fabricators of Raw Materials Plant

U-Haul has ceased operations at its American Fabricators of Raw Materials plant, or AMFORM, located at 4650 W. Pasadena. U-Haul continues to own the property but plans for the building are still being considered, plant president Cedric Moore confirmed. The last day of AMFORM operations was Dec. 2. The plant manufactured items like utility/furniture/appliance dollies, truck/trailer awnings, key-drop boxes, carriages/housings, tools, U-Haul display signage, and other components and special projects. Space limitations factored into the AMFORM decision as U-Haul pursued options to better meet its needs and the needs of its Team Members while curbing the need for outsourcing.

U-Haul Plans for Newest Store in Albuquerque

U-Haul intends to have its newest company-owned and –operated facility in the Albuquerque area up and running by late fall 2017. U-Haul acquired the vacant lot on the northeast corner of Coors Blvd. NW and Interstate 40 on October 31 and is in the process of finalizing details for a facility to be constructed there. The 5.41-acre property will feature a three-story building, a single-story building and two rows of outdoor drive-up self-storage. Plans call for a total of 1,032 self-storage units with 82,181 rentable square feet of self-storage. Indoor and outdoor self-storage will be available with 53% of the units offering climate control. U-Haul Moving & Storage at Coors & I-40 will also offer truck and trailer rentals, towing equipment and professional hitch installation, moving supplies, boxes and more. Propane is expected to be available sometime after opening. Until this store is open, customers can have their moving and self-storage needs met by the five other U-Haul-owned facilities in Albuquerque or any number of U-Haul neighborhood dealers in the area.
