Reliance Industries Reportedly Plans To Merge Reliance Communications And Reliance Telecom
Aug 15 13
Reliance Industries Limited (BSE:500325) is planning to merge Reliance Communications Ltd. (BSE:532712) and Reliance Telecom Limited into one entity, reported Economic Times citing two people familiar with the matter. The development follows the government's decision to disallow any telecom licensee or its promoter from holding any equity in another telecom company offering services in the same service area. The people told ET that the group is already considering the merger option as its first telecom permit comes up for renewal in 2015. One of the two people said that meanwhile, the group is in the process of writing to the telecom department requesting that the government review the draft guidelines once again.
Vodafone Group May Be Forced To Sell Stake In Bharti Airtel
Aug 3 13
Vodafone Group Public Limited Company (LSE:VOD) may be forced to sell its 4.4% stake in Bharti Airtel Limited (BSE:532454) worth about $1 billion after rules published on August 2, 2013 outlawed crossholdings in rival telecom companies. Under the rules, no carrier can own a direct or indirect equity stake in another operating in the same of any of India's 22 telecom service areas. Bharti and Vodafone provide services in all of them. The move also impacts companies like Reliance Communications Ltd. (BSE:532712) (RCom) which has a permissible stake of less than 9.9% in other telecom firms under previous licencing regime. RCom has a stake in Reliance Telecom Limited.
