O'brien & Gere Limited Key Developments

O'Brien & Gere Plans to Lay Off 27 Employees and Close its Louisville, Kentucky Office

O'Brien & Gere plans to lay off 27 employees, including seven at its headquarters in Syracuse, and close its Louisville, Ky., office because of weakness in its public-sector business. A slowdown in its public-sector business, which generates about 25% of its revenues, made the layoffs and the closing of the Louisville office necessary. The slowdown is the result of cutbacks in government spending. The jobs that are being eliminated are technical, engineering and support positions. Twenty of the 27 layoffs will occur in the Louisville office. The Louisville office is slated to close by the end of the year. The layoffs will not significantly lower the company's overall workforce level because it has 24 open jobs to fill in business areas, primarily in the private sector, that are experiencing growth. Private-sector projects represent about 75% of the company's business. O'Brien & Gere employs 900 people in 27 offices throughout the country. That number will go down to 26 when the Louisville office closes.
