Qatar Petroleum Signs a New Long-Term Gas Sale and Purchase Agreement with Dolphin Energy
Oct 6 16
Qatar Petroleum announced it has signed a new long-term gas sale and purchase agreement with Dolphin Energy, under which the Qatari state firm will deliver additional volumes to the United Arab Emirates. No further details were given on the duration of the contract, volumes or the all-important price. The company has been sending gas via the Dolphin subsea pipeline to the UAE and neighboring Oman for around $1.35/MMBtu since 2007 under long-term agreements to supply around 2 Bcf/d (20.7 Bcm/yr) to both countries. On top of this, Qatar has offered interruptible supplies of gas to the UAE, at a different price, because the 3.2 Bcf/d pipeline has additional capacity. The Dolphin deal appears to fulfill both Qatari and UAE objectives. Qatar, prefers long-term agreements, while the UAE is seeking additional supplies to provide energy security amid soaring demand, as its domestic development options, particularly of sour gas, have been hampered by commercial disagreements. It is understood that Oman has not signed up for more gas via Dolphin, whose shareholders are Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Development Co. on 51%, and Total and Occidental Petroleum on 24.5% each, even though its own gas supply situation is looking tight.
