Baystate Health System to Lay Off Approximately 300 People to Deal with a Projected Budget Shortfall of $75 Million
Aug 12 16
Baystate Health System announced that it will lay off approximately 300 people to deal with a projected budget shortfall of $75 million. The reduction represents 2.4% of the health system's 12,500-person workforce, and will reduce the shortfall by $20 million. The company will still face a budget gap of $15 million after the layoffs are completed and other measures are implemented. The organization's budget shortfall has many causes, including dwindling reimbursements from Medicaid and a recent math error caused by Partners HealthCare, which will contribute to Baystate losing $23 million in Medicare reimbursements from the federal government. The hospital also expects increased spending on wages, benefits, pharmaceutical costs and malpractice insurance. The layoffs come a year after Baystate grew its health system, acquiring Wing Hospital in Palmer from UMass Memorial and acquiring Noble Health Network in Westfield. The acquisition of Wing resulted in the layoffs of approximately 30 people in November as the hospital worked to consolidate inpatient services.
