Vapor IO announced the appointment of Don Duet to the position of president and chief operating officer. Duet’s experience will help guide the company’s expansion of Project Volutus, a 'data center as a platform' service which places thousands of micro data centers at the base of cell towers to enable cloud-based edge computing applications, including autonomous driving, augmented and virtual reality, IoT, and wireless 5G services. Prior to joining Vapor IO, Duet served as head of the Global Technology Division at Goldman Sachs Group, Inc.

Vapor IO Delivers True Edge Computing with Project Volutus

Vapor IO announced Project Volutus, which enables cloud providers, wireless carriers and web-scale companies to deliver cloud-based edge computing applications via a network of micro data centers deployed at the base of cell tower sites. The company also announced that Crown Castle, has made a minority investment in Vapor IO to accelerate the project’s development and deployment. Zettabytes of machine to machine communication and new application types will require a shift in how the industry thinks about data centricity and the delivery of edge services. In addition to supporting traditional cloud applications, Project Volutus allows carriers to incorporate virtual Radio Access Networks, including those based on Intel Corporation’s FlexRAN reference design, for speed and scale when upgrading their networks. By cross-connecting the radio network directly to edge services and the internet, Project Volutus eliminates multiple network hops and facilitates a new breed of low-latency edge applications. Using a retail co-location model, Project Volutus offers carrier and cloud-neutral micro data centers at the edge of the wireless network, giving cloud providers, web-scale companies and mobile network operators the power, rack space, network capacity and remote hands they need to scale high performance services and applications quickly to thousands of locations. Project Volutus utilizes Vapor IO’s Vapor Chamber. Project Volutus also utilizes Vapor IO software. Project Volutus allows for any cloud native stack to exist at the very edge of the network, making it easy to deploy applications at scale across thousands of micro data centers, weaving massive amounts of compute and cloud directly into the urban fabric. Project Volutus combines edge co-location with remote operations, intelligent cross-connects to wireless networks, and direct fiber routes to regional data centers and peering interconnects.

Vapor IO Launches Vapor Edge for Telecom

Vapor IO announced Vapor Edge for Telecom, an end-to-end platform for edge computing, now 5G-ready and designed to operate as a self-contained microdatacenter at the base of cell-enabled radio towers. Vapor Edge is an end-to-end platform for edge computing that provides wireless telecom companies with a simple way to deploy and manage cloud servers that are co-located with their base station equipment. This makes it easy for carriers and wireless base-station landowners to offer cloud compute capabilities in close proximity to the Radio Access Network (RAN), enabling new low-latency applications and creating new business models for these players as they forge partnerships with public cloud providers, web-scale companies and other OTT providers to deliver edge capabilities. Vapor Edge for Telecom can also help carriers upgrade and virtualize their networks by providing a way to house and manage their standard rack-mountable equipment, including rack-mountable cloud servers as well as C-RAN, NFV, MEC and other specialized telecom equipment. Vapor Edge for Telecom offers the following key benefits to wireless operators: available for 5G or 5th Generation Wireless: Vapor Edge for Telecom supports today’s 2G, 3G and 4G technologies, and is currently available for the coming 5G technologies that will provide extremely high-bandwidth, highly-reliable and very low latency wireless services. Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC): Vapor Edge for Telecom supports the concept of edge computing with or without MEC. Users can add server equipment to Vapor Edge without requiring any changes to base station equipment, but also as base station equipment receives MEC upgrades. Vapor Edge for Telecom interfaces with MEC APIs to coordinate work as well as expose real time status of the RF network to cloud applications. Equipment providers can also use Vapor Edge for Telecom to extend their MEC capabilities by housing MEC servers in the Vapor Chamber, which will allow for much more expansion capability than exists in standard base station equipment. Network Function Virtualization (NFV): As operators virtualize their networks and move their networking logic onto commodity off-the-shelf servers, those servers can be incorporated into Vapor Edge for Telecom. NFV servers can be housed in the Vapor Chamber located in a base station and can be instrumented with OpenDCRE for remote management with Vapor Edge software. Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN): Vapor Edge help operators move their Radio Access Network logic onto off-the-shelf servers. Vapor Edge also allows the operator to incorporate their own private cloud for operating C-RAN at the base station. Cloud and OTT Services. Vapor Edge allows public and private cloud providers, as well as OTT providers (such as media companies) to have a presence in the base station and run workloads on servers in the Vapor Edge environment, which can be used to offload work from centralized data centers.
